When I was in college, 1989-93, I found a beer called Hiedelberg. It came in small chubby 11oz bottles for $5 a 12 pack. I'm sure it tastes horrendous but I'd love to find some for old time sake. Anyone familiar with this beer?
This one? It was an old Pacific Northwest brand, eventually owned by Carling. By the time you were drinking it, it was a Heileman brand (they bought Carling-National in the late '70's). Heileman was bought by Stroh in '96, and then Pabst bought most of their brands in '99 when Stroh threw in the towel. Looks like Pabst marketed Heidelberg that first year and then dropped the brand.
I thought this was going to be about beer FROM Heidelberg... I grew up near there, and wished I was man enough to drink the cask that killed the man in the castle.
Is it still around, Bill? I take it that Pabst still markets some of their lesser brands, even tho' they don't list them on their corporate site. Isn't Lucky Lager still around, converted to a house brand for a west coast supermarket chain. (Lucky, I guess?) Apparently, Carling attempted to make Heidelberg their "premium-priced" beer in the 1970's (which would be right before they acquired the rights for Tuborg in the US). Black Label was usually sold in the "popular price" segment, which is often cited as one of the reasons for Carling's rise and then rapid fall as a national brewer. Here's an ad ©1970 for the beer, brewed and marketed in Mass. They even claimed they trucked in "spring water" to their Natick, MA brewery (which was located on Lake Cochituate- seems kinda expensive to haul water from elsewhere in that case) and used "...high prime imported Hallertau hops". They even used that cool Carling west coast bottle design (can't remember what they were called).
The label was very similar and the serving size is the same. Looking at the brewing sites I remember most of those being on the label. Hate to hear its gone, but I really appreciate the info.
