After 14 years they are closing due to personal issues. The owner/brewer is going to be brewing for another Sylva brewery (yet to be named).

They had a loyal following, I just found that there beers were just not my style.

There are 3 other breweries in Sylva, a town of 3,000, but near Western Carolina University.

Wondered why, glad you shed some light. I have three of his growlers, really cool growlers. Ah well.

It has been for sale for a while, guess no takers yet, and they want to move on. In an interview on the news, they mentioned the stress plus health problems related to the stress.

The television announcer pronounced the name wrong. Typical. Of course
Heinzelmännchen is a little hard to pronounce.

How is it pronounced? I'm not certain how else it could be produced than how I've pronounced it. But its also entirely possible that I've always pronounced it wrong.

I visited them years ago and had a very pleasant experience talking with the brewer and trying their beer. Super nice guy. They were one of the first breweries in that region if I'm not mistaken. I wish them well.

What I heard, and I've listened to it several times, was Heinz-el-mak-en.

And maybe they pronounce it that way too, but simply reading the Deutch that's there (Heinzelmännchen) it should be pronounced along the lines of Hein-zel-mayn-chen or at the very least Hein-zel-maan-chen although the umlaut above the A clearly makes it long. The depth of the emphasis on the ä can vary, especially with the different dialects in the south. One thing is for sure though, those two n's aren't just in there for no reason, Germans don't do that.

By the way... doesn't matter much now, does it? :slight_frown: Hate to see any brewery close up shop.

They are really nice folks and they were definitely the first in the region. Pre-Nantahala, Pre-Waynesville (and beyond). Sylva is going to be a hot spot in under 10 years. Population may only be 3,000 now but the beauty and culture of that town/area is going to draw a lot of people to that area.
