Just picked up some bottles of De Molen Hel & Verdoemenis. I understand this is an exceptionally good cellar beer. If anyone would like to share their experiences aging this, I'd love to hear their comments or suggestions.

I put a few down last fall, I haven't opened one yet. It was spectacular then, not sure if its a waste of cellar space or not.

I have not had it fresh but did try a year old bottle and it was very good.

A couple of months ago I shared a bottle my lovely wife had bought for my birthday a few years ago, the bottle dated 2008. It was one of the better imperial stouts I've had: rich, full bodied, chocolatey and dry.

I'd stored it in a dark box in my basement, around 65 to 60 degrees year round. As we reached the bottoms of our glasses we all encountered these gooey, gel-like bits, still not sure what they were. Yeast globs?

Overall, the beer was fantastic, though. I envy you trying it for the first time.

Thanks for sharing this. I was excited when a bottle shop about 20 miles away started selling De Molen beers about 6 months ago. When this one (finally) showed up, I was ecstatic. However, don't envy me yet. I don't plan on cracking any of these open for a long, long time (well, maybe one this winter  ).

By the way, that is almost certainly yeast in that picture. When bottle-conditioned beers are left upright and undisturbed for a long period of time, the yeast settles and forms a cake like that on the bottom. In extremely old beers, I hear the cake can actually get pretty hard and compact.

I had a 2010 bottling last week and would say with certainty that it hasn't budged an inch. Delicious, but capable of much more with some bottle age.

Great to hear all this. Last year I bought a 750ml 2010 when on vacation in London. I had no idea what it was but the label was cool and the words "Imperial Stout" and "bottle 6 of 250" or something like that. It's been in proper cellar conditions since then as I hope to wait for the right occasion to open it. Might be two more years but we shall see.
