EUGENE, OR (January 10, 2013) – Oakshire Brewing will release their 3rd Barrel Aged Beer under the label Hellshire on Saturday, February 16th. Hellshire III is a Foreign Style Stout aged for nearly a year in bourbon barrels from Heaven Hills Distillery in Kentucky. Sales of the 22oz wax dipped bottles will begin at 10a in the tasting room on Madera Street during the Oregon Brewers Guild Zwickelmania event. "We're really excited to release Hellshire III after a long layoff from our Hellshire series” said Brewmaster Matt Van Wyk. “We learned a lot from the Hellshire II ‘speed bump’, and after winning a Gold Medal with this Beer in Chicago, it lets me know we're back on track. Hellshire III is the best of the series so far." In November 2012 Van Wyk attended the Festival of Wood & Barrel Aged Beer in Chicago, IL; a single barrel version of Hellshire III was entered and won the gold medal.

During the Hellshire III release party on February 16th, Oakshire will also sell vintage Brewer’s Reserve Series beers and Hellshire I in very limited quantities. Other specialty barrel aged beers will be available on draught throughout the day. Live music will be provided by local bluegrass band Whiskey Chasers and food will be available for purchase from Delacata – voted Best Food Cart of Eugene 2012. Hellshire III will be sold at Oakshire Brewing during dock sale hours starting on Saturday, February 16th from 10a-5p. The 22oz bottles will sell for $15 each and supplies are limited to roughly 140 cases.

Had this on tap in October. Well balanced between stout and bourbon. I believe Matt said it was Heart Shaped Box.

Still have some Hellshire II to return. Hope they'll still take it back.

Well, we said we'd take it back and we won't be going back on our word tcampbel1.
Thanks for the complement WriterLJBerg. We had considered making a bottled version of HSB, but I decided not to. It was great on it's own.
And Jason, I'm not sure what's so wrong with Hellshire I, but it's tasting great to me, so maybe I did set the bar high. You'll have to come down and find out. If you don't like it, we'll have plenty of other great beers to try.
    Cheers all.

Why start with foreign style stout as the base?

Anyone had a Hellshire I recently? I'm sitting on one and I'm wondering if I should take it out.

Yes, I know what I just said.

This seems like as good a place as any for this. Forgive me if I have my facts wrong - the Hellshire brewer is from Flossmoor Station right?

WTF happened - Flossmoor used to be an IPA/DIPA machine - they were waxing new creations that were mostly great every other month.

At a tasting awhile ago, one of the guys (teddyarrowhead) brought one out of the cellar. It was actually pretty good. I opened one of my own a few months later, and it was astringent as is the common complaint.

What I've concluded (and the reviews seem to back me up) is that there's some pretty wild bottle variation going on, with more of the bad bottles than the good ones. Of the 5 I've had, 3 were good to pretty good, 2 were bitter and astringent. (This is what bit me in the ass when I was telling people that it was a good beer, as it turns out. *sigh* I got what I deserved, I suppose.)

Thus, it's always going to be a crapshoot. I have 3 or 4 bottles left, though, and I at least will open and try them over the next 2 years.

I was downsizing my cellar by consuming everything and popped 3 this past summer. All three were absolutely great! I remember hating it upon release because it was so hot but i loved the three I opened. I will be hanging on to my last few for another year because I hope it gets even better!
Ba hi fi rye is still the best barley wine on the face of the planet:slight_smile:

Any idea what the bottle limits will be? Also, will any get distributed to Portland?

    Answering some Q's:
@kscaldef No limits. we'll See how much is left 2/17. Likely a little left, but our distributor might not know what to do with 30-40 cases (so how do they split it up) Might make sense for us to sell it til it's gone.

@dirtylou. You are right. What happened? They are still doing great, but the brewer who was rotating IPAs and marking by waxes is me. I'm in Oregon.

@sukwonee Why not? Actually I have two answers. 1) I was shooting to make a beer called Heart Shaped Box. needed a biggish stout and maybe not an Imperial (I changed my mind on the HSB). and 2) when you are shooting for a lower side abv Imp stout and you hit the OG, but the yeast craps out early, you get something different. I don't know that it is a Foreign Style stout, I just had to say something. It's not Imperial. It's got Oats, but it's not really an Oatmeal Stout. I put cocoa nibs in the whirlpool. is it a Chocolate Stout? Styles are stupid anyway. We do a lot more blending of barrels and less of one style/one barrel/one outcome.
