so someone gave me a recipe that sounds amazing but it was only extract and i want to do it all grain.
    the recipe calls for:
    2.0 lbs Golden Light DME
    4.0 lbs Maris Otter LME

    and he said 13 plato.

can you guys dumb this one down a bit for me to a simpler all grain recipe? i.e. pounds of regular grain needed?

    according to this http://www.brewersfriend.com/plato-to-sg-conversion-chart/ 13P is 1.053.

So about 3.5# of Pils malt (or maybe 2 row) and 7# of Maris Otter with 70% efficiency will probably get you close, but it all depends on your system. It also depends on what you think the Gold DME is adding. I recommend playing with a calculator like BrewCipher.

What was the actual recipe? What are you trying to make? You might be able to go with all Maris Otter depending on the style.

A rough guess would be that 6 pounds of DME is equal to 10 pounds of grain. It's always going to be a ballpark because you have different brands making different ingredients and none of them are exactly the same. The efficiency of your mash tun is also a factor. Lots of great all grain beers are made by adjusting the wort (pre boil) with additional DME if you need to go that route.

Worst case scenario: You'll brew a good beer and have to do it again to perfect it.

    1# DME ~= 1.6# grain
    1# LME ~= 1.33# grain
