I have a family friend who is originally from Germany and has basically been the person I would consider my grandfather for my entire life. I never new either of my actual ones, and he and my father became friends after a few meetings together through work and has since retired and living in my home town. They always talk about a late spring/early summer festival in southern Germany that they would go to. And my avatar is a picture of a couple of the mugs they have brought back(this being in the early 1980's). Fast forward to now where my father gave me a pair, and me wanting to actually try some of that brewey's beer. My family friend had his son, still living in Germany, pick some up and send them to the states. What arrived were two bottles. One Konig Ludwig Dunkel, and One Konig Ludwig Weiss. Seeing as the label name (Konig Ludwig) does not match the name on the mugs I have (Brauerei Genossenschaft Holzkirchen EG) I am curious if this is beer is indeed made by the same company/brewery or if I have just received some very tasty German beer but with no actual connection to the mugs I have. My family friend says it is the same brewery just the named changed, but with his advanced age he seems to be forgetful these days. I have tried my hand at some Google-fu but can't seem to come up with any information, or atelast any I can read, about Brauerei Genossenschaft Holzkirchen EG. Thanks in advance for any help/thoughts.
He is half right. The Holzkirchner and König Ludwig brands belong to the same company nowadays. I don't know whether they are still produced in separate breweries.
König Ludwig has four places, according to their website: Kaltenberg, Fürstenfeldbruck, Holzkirchen and Thannhausen. http://www.oberbraeu-holzkirchen.de/schlossbrauerei/standorte/ Holzkirchen seems to be brewing Helles only.
