A friend of mine was trying to remember a beer that he saw recently that was aged "in very special" bourbon barrels.

He can't remember what the bottle was, and I have tried researching it and have come up empty.

    Does anyone have any thoughts?

I feel like there's any number of beers that could be... unless 'very special' is a specific term in the bourbon world and I'm unaware of this... as it is, it seem awfully vague.

This is a broad question anyway. If your friend isn't a beer nerd that makes it even broader.

I have a friend who's just getting into good beer, and sometimes some of his "oh my god just tried this very rare and unusual beer but can't remember the name" questions, upon investigation, turn out to be something fairly generic.

Edit - so is there anything more to go on? Style?

He is definitely a beer nerd, and he thinks he remembers seeing those words on the bottle. My belief is that it was an imperial stout that was "hinting" at PVW barrels, but didn't say it.

And I know it is a broad quest I am on, but I have had enough fun asking him if he ever figured out the beer, and he winced every time I did, so now it's time for me to try and end his pain!

Thanks for any help, and I am sorry I am so vague. I will tag him on here eventually, once we get a few guesses, but I am hoping to surprise him with an answer. He is a well known porch bomber!

Where did he see it? Was it at a store? This should help narrow it to distribution limits.
Remember any of the label? cap? color? waxed?
There is still a lot of information that he can provide to make this easier, for now is the needle in the haystack.

Gotcha. Where did he try it? And it sounds like he's enough of a nerd that I imagine he would have recognised some of the more obvious choices straight off the bat?

Edit - this thread might stir his memory:

I think he remembers seeing it at his house at a share? He trades all over the place, so that won't help I don't think. There was another BA guy there as well and both of them were drawing a blank.

    Ok heck...................here we go..

    @PA-Michigander @MMBrew

I want to end your pain, b/c I have been there where you can't quite remember something, although for me it is probably senility!

Ill give it a random stab:

Hoppin’ Frog Barrel Aged BORIS Van Wink
"Aged in very special Kentucky whiskey barrels to add a super smooth, buttery, and complex whiskey character to our multi-award winning BORIS The Crusher Oatmeal Imperial Stout. Richer and bolder than our standard Bourbon Barrel Aged BORIS Stout, this rare version is a testament to our hard work and dedication in bringing our customers the very best."

    Eric,
When you discover what the beer is send me a message or tag me here so I can read it.

Reading your topic made me laugh because im 99% certain I read about said beer either via release notification, email or some other announcement. I had the same reaction thinking the barrels might be something like PVW but then I blew it off as marketing/advertisement fluff. So, maybe it was something local???

Now its gonna bother me until I recall what it was...

im not the OP but can confirm this isnt it

the beer they are thinking of has zero declaration of being in pappy barrels, it just eludes to it. kinda sorta?

I will be sure to let you know! Pizza Boy didn't do some kind of announcement like that with Bourbon Barrel SSU did they?

I thought that first off, but "Pappy" takes the mystery away for me.

    I am from Central PA.

@PA-Michigander has seen the thread, so hopefully he can chime in and give some more clues.

No, Terry posted a picture for the release announcement and you could clearly see those barrels were not pappy.

Im thinking its something more low-key like victory's new BA java stout or maybe something as silly as sexual chocolate that i read in passing since that release is on the horizon or just happened.

@mybeerbuzz does "very special barrel aged" ring a bell? Im thinking maybe it was a tweet I read from you?

Damn you Eric for keeping this at the front of my mind

At least I didn't say what beer did my wife drink at Dark Lord.

There was a long description of a BBA Stout (I believe it was a stout) and everything was in lower case letters until it came to the part about it "aging in VERY SPECIAL BOURBON BARRELS". It was at a share at my house but I don't think we opened it. It may have been out of distribution but not necessarily. It almost drove me insane for a day+ until I forgot about it. Then @Mipper nrings it back up again... :stuck_out_tongue:
