Not a brown ale, but I just tried Uinta's Hyve Honey Ale recently. I'm not much into lighter beers personally, but I thought this was enjoyable, though it didn't rock my socks off. Most of what I tasted were the malts, and the honey flavor is very subtle. Probably not the best of its kind, but I could probably enjoy a few of these on a summer day. May not please everyone though.

To me, so are Brown Ales. (just opened the door for a slamming). Looking at the Original post and having a less than experienced beer crowd, Newcastle might be the next step. Yep, totally agree, Newcastle is boring for my palette as well but we're in the overall minority.

Koko is available in kegs. Lake Placid Ubu would be a good one. Olde Burnside Ten Penny, Sixpoint Brownstone, Wandering Star Mild at Heart round out my picks.

Hard to beat Old Brown Dog in a brown ale.

Just had this on cask recently, very nice close to a brown porter.

Finest Kind, Finest Kind, Finest Kind.

If not Finest Kind (get where I'm going here?) then maybe a pils like Prima or Stoudts (can you get Stoudts up there)?

Not sure if either keg, but Slumbrew's Porter Square Brown and Cape Cod Porter are two excellent relatively local options.

Sierra Nevada is your answer. Pale Ale or Summerfest this time of year, or Tumbler in the fall.

The Steam also has great crossover appeal if they want something other than a brown.

Other ideas- what is the best Munich Dunkel you could get? Hoffbrau is really nice. Ayinger would just kill if it's available. A quality Maibock would also be great.

What he said. I'd take Old Brown Dog over Brooklyn, Bells, or Rogue any day of the week. That beer is so damn drinkable.

If it's a warm weather/outdoor party I would go with Lagunitas Little Sumpin Sumpin. Fantastic beer that I have found to be wildly popular with my non-craft friends. It's a bit out of your ABV range (7.5%) but Lagunitas has great bang for your buck.

Lagunitas is not a "bang for your buck" beer here in Massachusetts.

Anyone know if sixpoint bownstone is cheap in MA? What makes a keg cheap in an area? Locality? Or does it vary? Because there are lots of local options. 60min was pretty popular probably because it's pretty balanced, but it's expensive. 100$ for 1/6keg.

They're high 60's wholesale in NY.. probably translates to an $80 or $90 1/6 Keg retail. Shouldn't be too much more than that in MA.
