I can't imagine using electricity for a 5 or 10 gal. batch. NG, if available, is the best solution for most homebrewers, imho. It is fast, cheap, and has no expensive parts to buy or replace.

btw: Hard to figure out what a kwh really costs around here as it depends on volume and time of day now that they put in smart meters.

I've done 3 90 min boils and 2 60 min using a 15gal kettle with a regular bbq propane tank and it's not empty yet. I don't understand how electric is safer then propane with kids and a dog around since they both get hot.

It was the damned King of the Hill episode where the propane tank went off at the Mega Lo Mart killing Buckley, LuLu's boyfriend, and burning down the store. Since that episode everyone is scared to death of Propane

Sorry for the delayed response to everyone, I've been too busy cleaning up from the death and destruction I caused by taking your advice and using propane.

I suppose my fear is irrational, and I think i'll probably move in that direction. It just makes a lot more sense than overtaxing my electrical system. I'd still rather brew in my kitchen, but the window situation is not ideal for getting the steam out, so i'll have to wait until I can figure out a better way around that.

Thanks to everyone for weighing in.

Are you using the vent over the stove? Hopefully you have a ducted one...with a "high" setting.

There is no vent of any kind over the stove, unfortunately. That's the problem.

I only use electric and I can brew 15gal while getting everything to a rolling boil in less than 20min, but I do have access to 50A of 240V

The other electric option that you are totally missing is to use an immersion heater, just like a hot water heater would use. You can easily get your hands on a 5500W SS element for about 25$ you just need the power.

Putting in a 240v breaker is very easy and you can simply place the outlet very close to your panel (provided it is in the garage or easily accessible)

I really don't trust my ability to do any electrical work more involved than plugging/unplugging things. I don't have a box in my garage--the garage power comes from the house.

I do have a 1000W bucket heater that I've been using to help get to a boil on the stove--it cuts the time to boil from tap temps from over an hour to about 25-30 mins. If I get a burner I'll probably use a bucket heater in conjuction to further speed things up.

Not a heat stick, more like a kal setup where the element is physically attached to the pot and grounded. If its properly imstalles and has a gfci there should be very little issue with using it

You can get hurt with propane too ive seen people burn off their eyebrows before (my uncle), idiots will always find a way to use something the wrong way regardless of what it is
