Helping Sara LIF

I am coming to the generous BA community for help.

My wife, Sara, dropped her keys while trying to get into her car which just so happen to be about 50ft from a dumpster. When she went to pick them up the fox was apparently under the car and it bit her between her thumb and pointer finger (that "meaty" part of the hand). The fox broke the skin and she had several puncture wounds. It would not let go until she shook it off of her hand (once it let go she did get a good swift kick in).


Knowing this is an unusual action for normally a reclusive fox, we knew Sara would be required to get the rabies series of shots. I took her to our primary care physician thinking she could help but she told us that I needed to immediately drive Sara to the emergency room. We ended up waiting for 5 hours because they didn't have the medication there and had to call another hospital to have it sent over. The day of the incident, she had to get 5 shots directly at the location of the bite, followed by a series of 5 more shots at specific intervals (1,3, 7,14, 21 days).


Many people don’t think too much of Rabies anymore as vaccines have all but eradicated it but it is still present and extremely deadly if going untreated. Taken from the CDC website:


“The rabies virus infects the central nervous system, ultimately causing disease in the brain and death... As the disease progresses, more specific symptoms appear and may include insomnia, anxiety, confusion, slight or partial paralysis, excitation, hallucinations, agitation, hypersalivation (increase in saliva), difficulty swallowing, and hydrophobia (fear of water). Death usually occurs within days of the onset of these symptoms.”


The description shows exactly what my wife risked if she were to not get the rabies shot series immediately. It was a necessary medical procedure but a very expensive one, which is why I am coming to the BA community to help us in any way possible. At first our insurance (BCBS) would not cover a large portion of our medical bill because we had failed to reach our yearly family deductible. The visit/shots cost ~$7,500 which at first the insurance had only planned on covering about ~$1,000 of that. After several appeals and help from the hospital (which I will forever be grateful for) they were able to negotiate with the insurance company and get our bill down to ~$2,300 for the treatment. Still even with the discounts and negotiations it is difficult for us to afford to pay our bill. My wife only works part-time so we do not have a very high income and a bill like this over our head will definitely be difficult for us. We discussed with the hospital about a payment plan but they are asking us to pay $500 month (which is almost as much as our rent!). We are still waiting on the physician bill but that won’t be coming for another month or so which will increase the amount due to the hospital. It was this or sell my beer on mycellarbeer.com and I felt this was the better avenue.


I am uploading as much information as possible. Bills, patient instructions, etc…
