What is the latest on the Herkimer? Last time I was there a few years back it was horrid and I swore I would never return. Since then I've heard rumblings of a new brewer and that things have improved. I'll be in the area and might stop in to give it another chance if that is true. What are current thoughts?
I can't speak of the beer, as I haven't lived in the area for years. However, the new brewer (or perhaps new-new brewer since you were last there) has moved on, and I believe he just started at Surly. I'd guess his beers are still on tap, however, as this was a recent development. If you're in the area, why not give it a shot for yourself?
Go there for brunch on the weekend. Get a bloody mary, keep the pint. Beer's good enough to suffice as a chaser.
I only say this as I know you are open to boring lagers. I'd imagine (as has been shown by the comments already) that others may disagree.
Oh yes...I like my lagers....got three of those boring Czech Dark Lagers chilling in the fridge for later tonight....working my way through a case of those...tastes awesome every single time...
Over the years, the good beer I've had at the Herkimer have far surpassed the poor beers I've had. I don't go there often, but I don't hesitate to go when the occasion arrives.
The beers HAVE to be of German influence. That is their rule. I went about a month ago. They are nothing special to be honest. The food was descent. The atmosphere was fun and worth a try. I won't go back for the beer specifically, ever. Just my $.02
When you have so many great beer bars within a block or two, it makes it really hard to go there and have a pint of mediocre beer. I hear good things about the Gose that they only make once in a blue moon, but I bet thats because nobody thats had it ever had another Gose. Sad, boring beer generally infected yet also tasting of bleach. Yum.
I forget the guys name, but i think he worked at LB, Flat Earth, Herk and now Surly. Thats a lot of job hoppin' in a couple years!
I haven't been there in many years, but I have a deathly-allergic reaction to po-mo hipness, so I tend to avoid Uptown (unless it's 10 below with a wicked north wind). That said, this thread has me pretty-darn interested in making a return visit, as I tend to enjoy lager types of the boring variety . P.S. ZAP, it looks like your thread was really well-timed .
Not a big fan of German Lagers in general, so I haven't been there in a while. With that said, I remember liking their Alt at one point of time.
If you haven't been there in a while I'd say its worth checking out. The Tooler Weiss is good on these hot spring/summer days. The mini burgers are good too.
I stopped in this weekend and had the hefe (very good)...a sample of the KLA (solid)and the Dunkel (OK...but had a bit of the sour off notes I noticed in all their beers the last time I was there)...overall though much improved and definitely some decent offerings for now....who knows where it goes from here with that brewer moving on and I guess their owner is brewing again (maybe it was his beers I had the first time?)
