So I got one of these babies since my champagne bottle stopper got lost. But I tried using it for the first time with a 750mL BA Saison and here's what it looks like: Based on pictures of how to use this device, the rubber sealer is only covering up the opening partially. You can tell by the indentation: But since the thing narrows, this is as far as it will go. The Hermetus doesn't seem to budge. So how do you fully cover a bottle? Am I doing this wrong? ?_?
The opener's designed for a beer bottle that takes a standard crown cap. The champagne bottle crowns are larger, to fit the bigger "mouth" on the bottle. That's my guess. https://www.piwine.com/crown-caps.html
This bottle does use a standard crown bottle cap. There's no cork. (But yeah, perhaps it could be this bottle design.) Edit: @jesskidden Ohhh I see 26mm vs 29mm. I guess that could be it. Grr... so that means this isn't a good stopper for potentially most of my large format bottles (which are 750s rather than bombers).
Save the cork from a cork and cage bottle and then whittle it down sort of like a blunt pencil. Works fine for resealing big bottles and there's not a huge loss of carbonation if you pour cold, keep the beer cold and plan on finishing the bottle within the next few days.
Since the thing seems to be worthless, how about introducing it to Mr. Pliers before you throw it away? Spreading those side rails just a sixteenth of and inch on each side would likely do the trick.
I have one of these. It is my favorite opener. However, I have the same problem you have. The rubber always slips.
Mine has the rubber right to the end and works great. Same size/type bottle The grippy indents are supposed to grip the rubber in place.
I find for those with a fear of opening a champagne bottle, the easiest trick I figured out was to cut the topmost part of the cork off and use a corkscrew to remove the rest
