Hey NJ friends! My wife is currently heading down to Jersey City, NJ and I am wondering what she should be looking for at the beer stores that we can't get up here in MA? We both enjoy IPAs and stouts, and I'll enjoy most styles in between those 2. Not looking to make this a hassle for her (2 kiddos in tow with her), so more of the 'readily available' beers would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Well i think our best beers are Kane and Carton, so those would be my first picks. Beyond that not sure what beers you get distributed to MA but there are some top notch NY beers we get here such as SInglecut.

Kane Head High, Carton 077XX, Carton Cosmonaut, Magnify Low-Vis, Carton Boat, Icarus stuff...

I think those should all be easy to find at the right craft beer purveyor.

I'd check out CoolVines as the top beer shop in JC. They opened a second location but I haven't been so I'd recommend the 276 Grove St location.

Other options Thirsty Quaker, Buy Rite as mentioned, and Jersey Wine and Spirits.

I'd look for any offerings from Icarus, Carton (see if any regular coffee got distro'd), Kane Head High as NJ's best. Also some good NY breweries that may not get distro'd to you, Interboro, Industrial Arts, Singlecut, LIC Beer Project, Foreign Objects.

Also head high is probably one of my favorite IPAs ever. There is something that I have always loved about it and that love has never dissipated.

If they have any cans from Brix City you should tell her to pick those up.

Next time she is coming to Jersey make sure she sets aside some extra time to go to Yale Terrace for you. There is no other jersey brewery like it.

Not sure if she is still in Jersey City but I will second the JC Buy Rite. I was just there and they had a stack of Old Nation M-43 and Boss Tweed. Never seen those before in NJ.

That was for a one time event a couple weeks ago. I figured they'd be gone by now. Didn't help it was on Other Half's anniversary either I'd imagine. That said when they got it the cans were fresh, only two weeks old. Boss tweed I'd put up there with any distributed NEIPAs.
Disappointing they didn't sell out, or at least open fridge space to keep them fresh.
May dissuade old nation from trying again any time soon whenever they decide to expand on earnest.
I've seen this now happening a lot to Wrench now that it isn't selling out same day/weekend. If they have the manpower or desire either IA/Old Nation or similar brewers should probably start doing what Carton does and get guaranteed fridge space.
    ...
Anyway to be on topic, I guess my take-home point is a lot of great NEIPAs are now around as mentioned by other posters, so, assuming your trip isn't yet over, stick to the refrigerated stuff especially if you're passing through Jersey City. Generally most of the places mentioned previously I've been to and are actually pretty good about storing stuff normally.

    I
bought the M-43 there, and I was not impressed... drain poured half or it... I also bought a boss tweed, but need to try it.. Odd that the JC store seems to have gotten much more than the other 2 that had the event... heard they got like 5 cases of each, and there's more than that just in leftovers at JC... It's kind of in an awkward location, on the Holland tunnel approach.

The boss Tweed is much better than the M-43, having had both. But it won't change your life with all the other options around. I wouldn't have considered it a drain pour myself, but given I was spending too much money later that afternoon at OH I could only justify a single 4 pack, and honestly I prefer Wrench to the taster of M-43 I had, though not by miles.

luckily I bought singles, were only $4.99 a pop thankfully... I think it may have been off - but not sure, I normally don't dump stuff - but I was drinking tree house and trilliums before and after it, which probably didn't help. Guy I know in Michigan says they have gotten far more inconsistent now that they are distroing further, but who knows…
