Hey all, so my birthday is on Thursday, and as such, I'm having people over to crack some bottles. My intent was to do some cellar cleaning, but I have found that all my beers in there are big (12+%) I want to have a good tasting and enjoy some great brews, but I also want everyone to be safe and able to get home. How would you guys handle this in terms of how many bottles to open?

1 bomber per 2 people per hour. so if 10 people show up you open 5 bombers an hour. This way everyone is basically drinking one 12% beer an hour. Stop your tasting at least an hour before everyone needs to leave and drink lots of water throughout

Water will of course be a must, as well as I will be serving pulled pork sandwiches, coleslaw and potato salad, so stomachs should be full. There will be 7 including myself, and I'm expecting 5-8 for drinking people go home @ 9 (we all have early jobs) so by the math 10-11 bottles total?

If you have to work in the morning I'd knock off a bottle or two. just think, 2 bombers for 7 people is a little more than half a glass of 12% beer. that translates to one 6% beer. times that by 4 and you get 8 bombers. aside from the math, drink until you're happy and you've celebrated enough, but know when to call it quits.

My advice is to switch the party to Fri/Sat and drink up.

Lol, thanks for the ideas to knock off a bottle or two, might be better and allow us to really appreciate without getting to bad.

As far as holding off for the weekend, my step-dad's birthday is Friday (he'll be at the tasting too) and then there is Fathers day and birthday stuff with the family all weekend long.

We always have a pitcher of water at the table. When someone finishes the beer they are tasting, have them pour water into their glass and drink it. This accomplishes rinsing the glass and keeping hydrated. It also avoids a million trips to the sink to rinse glasses after each beer.

Many people would be DUI at that rate. 1 hour is nothing. I have a BacTrac S80 that keeps me out of trouble - had a 4 pack of Hoptimum over 5 hours and 1 Sculpin, at the end was .16 BAC. 235lb male. .16 takes around 4 - 5 hours to get to a safe level which imo is under .04.

You'd be amazed how sober .08 feels. Most people have no clue when they are legal. My friend said he felt "slightly buzzed" one night and wanted to drive home. He was .11.

At first I thought that thing was kind of expensive....but then you start to think how much a DUI costs even if you don't get into an accident and get sued.
