I've got a trade coming through and the box I'll be getting will be landing on Friday. Only problem is, I might be out of town for the weekend and if I am, I wouldn't be able to get the box. Rather than have my box sit around outside for a couple of days, I was thinking of just having it held at the store closest to me so I could pick it up.

Anyone have experience with this? I guess I'm curious how the beer is stored and handled at the store and if maybe you'd have to schedule a pickup time. Thanks!

I've done this with FedEx but only for a day or two. With the cold winters just making sure that it wasn't left outside. Worked fine, no issues picking it up just showed up at the FedEx store, scheduled time. A few days/over the weekend should be fine. (depending on what is shipped)

I've done it, but if I recall correctly there are gotchas. With Fedex only the sender can re-route a package, and with UPS they need to attempt a delivery before they will hold. Something along those lines - just call and ask...

Thank you both! I will check with the store closest to me and see what the requirements are...

I've done this at least 10 or so times in the last 2 months...never a problem. This is with Fedex. And cbeer may have been mistaken when he said the sender can only re-route package. Just track your package and choose a "pick up at fedex location". I literally just did this about 5 minutes ago and i'm the recipient! As far as the storage, my package has always been inside at whatever temp is set in the building in a locked wired cage. No problems when picking up, just a government issued id is required(ie, driver's license, passport, etc..)

Yeah, that may just be another UPS restriction. I think Fedex won't let you re-route to another address, but pickup is fine.

I believe your correct, not sure about the sender though...they might be able too. Hopefully when I send my packages I got the right address in the first place though!

Last time I did this at Fedex they must have opened the package at the facility it was being held. Saw it was alcohol and sent it back to the sender.

FedEx will hold it at any local-ish shipping center for free. UPS tacks on a fee for that. Basically, it will sit in a room temperature cage inside the building until you feel like picking it up.
