When you say full barrels, do you mean 30 gallon barrels, or are you working with something smaller?

ISO Bourbon Barrel Oud Bruin! Do you have a blog with any more info on your homebrewing exploits?

    That Oud Bruin sounds fantastic.

I only received a sour as an extra once - from domtronzero - and it was great!

The Oud Bruin is in a 53 gallon used Heaven Hill barrel. We (my brewing partner and I) brewed a northern english brown ale and fermented it out. We then filled the barrel in May of 2010 and used a sour blend. In November 2010 we pulled 5 gallons out and put 5 gallons fresh in (mini solera). The in the summer of 2011 we pulled 10 gallons out and put 10 back. We tweak the flavors a little every time.

We (a 4 person collaberation) also have a 60 gallon red wine barrel that we filled in August of 2011 (edit: said 2010 first time) with the intent of it being a straight lambic that we could fruit small portions if we want. It hasn't soured as fast as we would like. We used two different lambic strains on this one.

There are a few other smaller projects going in 5-10 gallon non barrel containers.

Sorry, no blog. There isn't enough time.

That's a ton of beer! I would love to try some. I know a few people that have done wood aged beer but usually just age on cubes. Advanced indeed..

I homebrew, though I stopped brewing as much clean beer and have been recently aging sours/wilds. Most of my fermenters are now holding sour beers, like maybe 40 gallons or so of it. Straight lambics, Oud Bruin, Flanders Red, a Cantillon Iris Clone, lots of fruited lambics and Red ale, sour porter. If I ever feel like these are as good as a commercial beer, I'd send them out as extras.

Often, though I receive beer that is not well made...It's not a big deal because if I don't like it just chug it or I'll drain pour it. It's free beer can't complain too much about that, but just don't send me something just because you don't want to drink it!

As a homebrewer, I am always happy to get people's homebrew as an extra - great opportunity to taste other people's styles and get notes on what to do for my own work. I realize that extras are extras and I should not look a gift horse in the mouth, but I would say that I like it best when people hint ahead of time that any extras will be homebrew. It not only gives me a chance to send my own to them, but it also saves me some hassle, as I make a point in trades of trying to send at least one or two tasty and/or rare locals along - homebrew extras generally warrant homebrew back, to acknowledge the brewer's work.

Stawn sent me a kick-ass homebrew hefeweizen that is much better than commercial beers available around me. I would be happy to buy his beers if they are available.

As a new homebrewer, I'm always happy to get homebrews, always have been, always will be.

My 2nd homebrew is friggin' great, the next couple people I trade with can expect to get some. I went against the recipe for my English IPA partial mash/extract kit and dumped two ounces of cascade in as dry hops after a week in the fermenter. Came out GREAT! Holy cow, honestly I never expected success like this so early.

Homebrew isn't second rate beer, it's the blood and sweat of someone who likely spent a lot of money, time, and effort into their hobby, as well as poured gobs of their time, effort, and worrying into trying to make a great beer creation. I've gotten lots of homebrew extras and always give feedback to those who send them. It's a lot harder than you think if you've never done it. Appreciate it, support it, and know that this week's homebrewer is next year's new microbrewery.

Great job man, obviously you put a lot of blood and sweat into that, I'd love to try it!

I love getting homebrews as extras. In fact, I've received a few ridiculously good ones that are easily on par with high-end commercial stuff.

My only request is send me something because you love it - not because it's a 6 month old IPA that's been sitting around or a bad batch and you just need to get rid of it!

I'm a homebrewer myself and just getting into sours. I have a Kriek aging now (only 6 months) of which I taste monthly and right now it's horrible. I'd love to try some of your sours. Any chance you would trade for some homebrew belgain tripel, saison, or Dogfish Head Midas Touch Clone? I must admit that the Midas Touch clone is a failure, nothing like the original. That being said, I think it has come around with 6-8 months age and isn't too bad, for an 11-12% beer. Let me know. Thanks.
