I'm thinking of putting together a Homebrew bif. Been having fun with other bits but thought a Homebrew themed one would be great.

As I've unfortunately tried many nearly undrinkable homebrews, and I'm sure several of you have too, the requirement to enter will be a photo of a medal you've won in a Homebrew competition.

This isn't the bif thread, just looking for input, suggestions, and seeing how many people might be interested.

Never heard of that one, just hoping to get some peeps that have brewed enough to at least win some awards. I know there's a lot of awesome brewers that have never entered competitions, but I think there needs to be some way to keep the quality high, and this was the best idea I could come up with.

I'll bite. WTF is a BIF? I'm sure it's something obvious.

So only medal winning homebrewers are invited to this bif? Seems a little short sighted...not all that brew have competitions in mind. I have nothing to prove with my brews, the thought of entering a comp has only crossed my mind once when some friends REALLY liked a wheat beer I brewed and pushed me in that direction. I get your goal, but don't see the means justified by the end.

Agreed, plus medals don't necessarily equate to great beer. I love the spirit and nature of the idea though. The rubber meets the road will be a challenge to work out. If you are interested in swapping Homebrew, consider joining and Homebrew club (also not a guarantee of quality beer unfortunately).

I guess you don't want my peach sour then.

I have medaled in comps against up to 33 entires, others had 12, others had 2. Medals don't always necessitate great beers.

Where are these comps with two per category? Résumé padding time! But thinking about it, I have medaled against ~300 entries a bunch of times and ~600 entries once. I'm cheating and counting BoS round medals as beating everything that finished lower or didn't make it to the BoS round. I have also failed to medal/ribbon within a category, against a small number of competitors, "once or twice."

Seriously, unless a competition is really tiny, I don't believe truly bad beers win. But I do believe good/great beers can lose to not quite as good/great beers in any competition. The Jets can beat the Patriots on any given Sunday, but my money is still on the Pats.

Having inadvertently provided credentials, I'm nevertheless not interested in a medals only BIF.

I don't do comps. I'm not interested in wasting my sours.

I would be interested in a little BIF, however, if people like sours and other funky beers.

There was a first time ever BJCP comp attached to a 2 year old cider & beer festival in town that waited until a couple months prior to event to announce to our club, and then didn't really advertise the comp. The communication on it was very sub par for sure. I took 1st in IIPA and IPA, there were no other medals in the IIPA category, and only a handful of IPAs I beat out. My rebrew w/ tweaks of that IPA will be going into the largest one we have in the beginning of February for real judging. Hoping to place there, will be doing both versions 001 vs 644.

The whole medal idea is just an attempt to weed out some crap. I know it's not a guarantee of anything, I just don't want someone to send their own Kickass personal favorite Homebrew and get some shit brewed on with a Mr Beer kit they got for Christmas.

I am in a Homebrew Club and share my beer plenty, but I'm interested in trying stuff outside of my club.

It seems that what you are trying to avoid is just an aspect, or pitfall, of trading.

I think you're going to miss out on a lot of good beer with this requirement, not just because not everyone is into competitions, but because it rubs people the wrong way.

Anyway, I totally understand wanting to maximize your chances at trying stellar brews...but I don't think this is the best way to go about it.

I've yet to win a medal. I did enter 1 competition so far that didn't seperate out beer styles. The winner was a orange dreamsicle cream ale. Obviously my American Barleywine lost.

If folks are into it, let's just do it. Comp beers be damned. Maybe send 4 - 6 beers with subsequent tasting notes and recipes if wanted. Not sure how to set up the BIF system, however. @jbakajust1?

I got some medals; they don't drink so good.

I'll trade with any number of newbies, or someone willing to take a few bottles of cider/mead among their box o beer.

    cheers--

My boy corgi, Prince Charming, is in. He brews solid beer.

In all seriousness, I'm down for a non-medal home-brew BIF, provided noobs keg their beer or wait at least a month before shipping. I had two bottles I received turn into shrapnel from past BIFs, which was not cool. Half the fun of BIFs is helping out noobs and receiving constructive criticism on your own beers.

I have medaled in 100% of the competitions entered. I've only entered one competition ever. The run of the mill Octoberfest I brewed took first place in 2001. I am in no way qualified for your elitist beer it forward club, and I'm sure my beers fall far short of many on here.
