hi guys i have just started my second home-brew project. 1st was an ale and now i am going for a Mexican cerveza. problem being it has been in the primary for a week now and there has been very little action. no real head has formed and very little bubbling. i took a hydro reading at the start and one week later. it has dropped significantly. do you think everything is ok. any advice welcome....
Sounds like fermentation went quick. Also, check out www.howtobrew.com Tons of great and free information there.
What kind of yeast are you using? If you are using a lager, there won't be the same kind of activity that you'd see with an ale. They tend to go slower, kick up less krausen and as a result of all of the above, less airlock activity (not that that is a reliable indicator of fermentation anyway)
Some relevant newbie stuff that might interest you. Airlock activity is not a reliable indicator of fermentation activity. You may never see a bubble, but the fermentation proceeds normally. One of my buckets is like this, I never see bubbles. But then I don't look anymore anyway. Also, try to resist the urge to be opening your beers, especially early. You can be quite sure that even if you've reached your final gravity, the yeast surely aren't done cleaning up after only one week. Patience!
thanks guys. going with your advice and I'm leaving it for another week. will then perhaps condition it.. will keep you updated
