I got started with a Mr. Beer kit. You won't brew a great beer, but it will be drinkable, and you will become familiar with some of the processes. Then start reading, and ordering some extract brewing ingredient kits from a supply store and ramp up from there. I still use some of my Mr. Beer kegs as fermenters because I like brewing 2 gallon batches. With small batches you get to brew something new more often, and if you make a mistake it doesn't hurt so much to pour it down the drain.
Kits are designed to get the most out of your pocket. try some starter kit that show you the way to homebrewing and you decide your self what is your kit.
