It's no secret that many of us on the Homebrewing forum also brew cider, mead, and/or wine. Posting about brewing things other than beer has been verboten for the most part, unless it is somehow related to beer brewing. Now that there's an Other Beverages forum, how many folks would be interested in a Homebrewing Other Beverages Subforum?
I previously thought it was a bad idea, but I thought it was a bad idea for the same reason I thought a general Other Beverages forum would be a bad idea, so I guess I withdraw my objection. I wonder what makes the most sense, part of me thinks having distinct subforums for cider, mead, and wine would be best (but there is definitely some overlap so maybe not).
I can see it working best like this one does. Post your thread, stay on topic. At least in a subforum for other beverages I won't have to police if someone posts an anecdotal reply about wine in a cider post. If we get it moved through I will set it up like this section, we will have a 2019 What Other Fermented Beverages Are You Drinking Now thread and a 2019 Brewing Other Beverages thread. Same rules will apply, don't post your hydro sample in the "I'm Drinking" and the "I'm Brewing" thread at the same time...
I agree that a separate subforum for each would probably be best, but since it's a beer site, there probably wouldn't be enough activity in each to warrant it. A catchall subforum so that we can chat about the Chilean and Argentinian grapes that a showing up in LHBS now, cool varietals of honey you scored from the local apiary, what apples are you pressing for your ciders this year, etc. is really all I'm looking for. I know I could go to HBT for all this, but I like to one stop shop.
Absolutely, sign me up for subforums!!!! I brew ciders, and will in time make meads. Question mark regarding wines. I'd love to have conversation and get community support.
I currently only brew beer but wouldn't close the door to cider, mead, wine or even hot sauce. Although hot sauce can be fermented I don't know if it's technically 'brewed', and I probably wouldn't imbibe enough in one sitting to consider it a beverage. Echoing @MrOH I'd prefer to shop on BA, where I cut my teeth on homebrewing forums.
I've been doing a lot of test batches for work. We're opening a Modern Tex-Mex place here soon and figure we should have cool, house made hot sauces, that maybe we can sell retail down the road. I'd be happy to share what I've learned so far in the appropriate place.
I've started doing plantarum fermented sauces. It would be interesting to have a place to compare notes.
No surprise that the new Other Beverages outlet is generating a lot of traffic. It will be interesting to see what subforums develop. Good move, IMhumbleO.
I do various other fermented beverages from time to time. Currently have bottles of a blueberry black currant mead in my fridge and a cider in my keezer. I just started a small batch of kombucha and will probably try to maintain production throughout the summer months so I have some minimally alcoholic drinks available.
Great idea. Done: https://www.beeradvocate.com/community/forums/other-fermentables.65/ If you get redirected, clear your browser's cache. Cheers!
A lot of us mess around in the brewing arts outside of beer. No problem. I'm not too wild about having people who are not interested in beer poking around in the homebrewing world. So if those folks do exist it's just as well they be segregated, isolated and kept apart from real brewers. Cheers.
