I’ve been lucky having very few aphids and have never used potassium soap. If you grow next year consider neem oil if you r organicly inclined.

I second the Neem oil if your plants survive. I used it last year and it worked.

Yep, very good material,,,,,, but once the burrs form I discontinue use. Some will disagree, but oils on burrs stay there and I’m not up for drinking Neem beer

Yeah, I wondered about when to stop using chems in order to avoid their presence in the beer...

In field crops, and when I was in the produce game , all pesticides would list days to harvest for any crop listed on the label. My practice was to double the days just to b safe and to use the least amount of pesticide. This practice did not always work in regards to crop damage, but I never got sued for poisoning or worried about what my family was eating.
In the end a smaller crop that is safe is better than one that keeps you up at night wondering if it’s ok.

Recent rain has helped my plants.
I've never applied pesticides. I do have a lot of birds in my yard daily looking for food.
Haven't seen pests on my binds.

Been an odd year for me here... Finally got a chance to weed out my yard, and only about half done... Focused on the irrigation for the last bit as I will finally need it this week. Cascade is doing OK, galena and comet a close second, with tahoma and EKG in third. The rest is in the hands of the weather at this point...

Well a late summer Hail storm moved through last night and laid waste to everything in my yard. So that sucks.

[IMG] My wife harvested the first round of hops this morning. Was going to brew a wet hop pale ale this morning but the Homebrew club is doing a barrel aged stout this morning and asked to borrow my equipment as I and stuck in a hot field playing airsoft with my son. Plan now is to dry them out and brew the pale ale with them next weekend. Cascade hops here. The new Mt. Hood and Prussian and Hartwick have spurs now finally.

Is it typical for you to obtain a harvest in July?

    Cheers!

No I think last year it was early August but it was the first year for our hops. This is only our 2nd year

Finally got bars forming. Crop should be decent but smaller due to the freeze and restart of the growing season

Same situation here. Yield will be much smaller this year compared to the massive haul I had last year. This was a weird growing season, but also the first time I tried cutting back the first shoots.

Finally got to brew my Wet Hop pale ale today. I was able to pick quite a few wet hops during the boil to put in the whirlpool/hop stand. All Cascade hops. Most of the hops were picked last week and dried and vacuum sealed. Bittered with CTZ hop shot. [IMG] [IMG]

And why not add a hail storm, hops look like it was raining buck shot. I imagin disease and begs will follow.

That sucks about the hailstorms and freezes. We are having a strange summer as well - all the plants are way behind schedule and yielding very little. I am happy to report that both my hop plants came back from the brink of withered death. The Cascade is starting to form cones, but the Chinook is just starting to climb as if it were spring.

That brings me to my question: when do you typically harvest your hops? I have read late August and early September. I can't imagine these will be even to close to harvestable then. We have a late growing season here, but I don't know if I can expect to see any cones, especially from the Chinook.

Me,,, start in late august usually wind up mid September. This year, unknown due to all the weather. Nuggets are toast, guessing due to hail, chinook seems ok, cascade also good as is Columbus. Willamettte gone, tettnang unknown
