I moved to San Diego from Baltimore a few months ago. Now, I know, the quality of the craft beer scene in San Diego is eons above Maryland, but I can't help but feel some nostalgia for my home state brews. I think I miss Heavy Seas the most, even if they aren't the most innovative, or exciting of craft brewers. I also missed out on Flying Dog's Seasonal, Dead Rise--a beer brewed with Old Bay seasoning (if you aren't from Maryland, you might not appreciate the extent of our obsession with Old Bay). Though its a PA brewery, I also can't get Troegs out here. Anybody find themselves in a a similar situation? Who can share in my lament?

I'm moving from the Bay Area of NorCal to Spain in 3 days. I drank a Sucks, a Ninkasi Tricerahops, and a Stone RIS today because I know I will be in a beer black hole soon. Your pain will soon be my pain, but at least you can still travel and wheel and deal.

And enjoy SD, one of the greatest cities, and beer cities, in the world in my opinion.

I bet you've become very acquainted with this particular BA page. Good luck and have fun. Also, keep in mind that your road trips will instead of being to different states, will be to different countries, which include some with some great breweries (Belgium and Germany). Check out Italy too, Baladin makes some great stuff. Enjoy the world.

MD BA's got your back. Ask and you shall receive.

Here's a tip. Go look at yourself in the mirror and repeat out loud:

I'm in San Diego, I need to get a grip.

Repeat until your brain has ceased to be conditioned to miss Flying Dog.

Nah I hear you. I'm from the UK. Miss all of the great cask options and the easier access to Cantillon

I guess it's good to be reminded from time to time that beer isn't just about numbers, and that there is still a lot of locality to it all.

It doesn't look like you will have trouble trading for those MD beers- so there's a bright spot there. Enjoy SD, though, I hear some pretty good things about it . Cheers!

Have you gone out to Alpine yet? I lived in SD for 11 years, but didn't go out to Alpine for the first 8 years. For some stupid reason I always thought it was "too far away". Takes 20-25 minutes on I-8, longer if you go during high-traffic times. Go on a Tuesday afteroon (they're closed Mondays, but they almost always bottle something fresh on their closed days). The pub opens at 11am, get some tacos and a flight. Brewery opens at 12 noon for bottles & growler fills. They will only fill Alpine growlers, so plan on investing in at least 3 (I believe they charge $10, which is a bit outrageous, but worth it in the end). Don't drink much- you'll have to make the drive back. Or better yet, bring a friend and promise them tacos and some bottles.

Also- it took me about 5-6 years to really warm up to San Diego. I moved there from Seattle, and I'm from Milwaukee originally. The whole "no worries, man" lifestyle got to me at first, but when I finally gave in my late twenties became some of the most relaxed years of my life.

Fish tacos from Marisco's truck on 30th & Grape
California burritos from just about any taco shop
Beers at Hamilton's and Toronado (Tell Islander I say hi)
Breweries up the wahoo. Societe will pretty much make you forget most of the breweries back home.
Trade beers. People on the East Coast will be willing to send pretty much anything for some of the beers you'll be able to get every day.
    Hike Torrey Pines.

I live in China and only visit my home state of Utah a couple of times a year. I get very homesick for local beers from Utah. Lucky for me I am home as we speak for a visit.

Same here. Move from Virginia to AZ 2 years ago and miss Troegs and Dead Rise (right there with ya on the Old Bay thing). I also miss Williamsburg Ale Works My Bitter Valentine. For anyone who hasn't had it, I feel sorry for you. An outstanding brew. But on the flip side, being so close to San Diego,(or as I refer to it, Beer Nirvana) and having access to so many outstanding choices helps to soothe my heartache for what I can no longer access. (Tip: If you still have family or friends there, ask them to ship you a care package!)

I moved to Oregon a few years ago from Pennsylvania. The beer in Oregon is amazing but I truly miss being able to enjoy the offerings of Tröegs. I used to live 5 minutes from their original location and sometimes find myself longing for their brews.

From VT to NYC. obviously some good distribution in NYC, but Theres some serious heartache when thinking about all the Lawsons, Alchemist, and Hill Farmstead I had access to on a daily basis (sometimes for free).

We don't get Dead Rise in NJ (but we do get the Herrs potato chips with old bay)
If you ever need some Troegs or other East Coast beers, don't hesitate to hit me up.

I am not from Maryland, but I do love me some Old Bay seasoning. I will have to see if there's any Dead Rise around here when it's in season since we do get Flying Dog distro here.

After living in Alabama for 4 years, I do miss buying Good People, Beer Engineers and Tallgrass (brewed in KS but not distributed in PA).
