Honestly why does anyone spend over 2 dollars on a bottle opener?

For the same reason that they spend $200+ on sneakers or a 10 million on a 5,000sq foot house. Because they can and they want to buy what they like. People like nice things.

    Why do you care?

Because they want to. Why do people waste their time taking a picture of a glass of beer in front of a sunset?

I spent $5 on my Bell's Stainless Steel Bottle and I am very happy with my purchase. I haven't been able to pull the trigger on the really cool Stone Gargoyle Bottle Opener for $35 + shipping.

I can think of several reasons:

They want to support that particular brewery
They like the style of that opener
They want people to know they mean "business" with beer when they pull that badboy out to pop open some cold ones
They want to support the individual who made that opener
They didn't actually pay that amount - but got it as a gift from a friend, family or a brewery
Beer to them is their hobby and passion, and they look at the opener as an extension of that
They want one opener to last them for their lifetime. Openers that are under $2 probably don't last as long as those that are more expensive
And the list could go on...

You look at the bottle opener as a tool, something that just helps you achieve your goal of drinking beer. That's OK. There's no need for you to buy a Mikita Sawzall when a hacksaw will do. Others view it differently, and that is OK too.

Because that one that cost 1.98 was POS and broke.

    Cheers!

Why does anyone pay over $2 for a beer? I mean a beer is a beer right?

Not to be picky, but... Sawzall is a trademark name of the Milwaukee Electric Tool Company.

I'm too cheap to spend a penny on a bottle opener. That's why I only drink twist-offs.

I can see supporting a local brewery all right... Nine times out of ten you can get a logo for FREE at festival ... Sometimes even just by being nice and sending an email to a brewery .
I had to ask the question tho, wasnt to get people riled up. Although the dumbest answer I got back was
Why do people waste their time taking a picture of a glass of beer in front of a sunset ?

I have this one. It looks awesome, but doesn't open bottles very well. The lip part that goes under the bottle cap to pry it off is a bit too thick, and doesn't fit quite right. I got one of these when they first came out, so maybe they've fixed that problem by now. Or maybe I just got a defective one.

Awesome. And who doesn't love Lagunitas indeed.

I should have bought one of those when I had the chance. Too late for that now.

Lagunitas opener looks pretty sweet. Why is it too late to get one? Looks like they are available through the brewery's website.

My next opener is probably going to be a wall mount.
