Honestly why does anyone spend over 2 dollars on a bottle opener?

I just got this one from a Kickstarter campaign for Borough Furnace, a company just starting up in the cast iron business.

I love how heavy duty and simple it is. Also it grips the width of the cap so it produces minimal bending.

Because the jerks at the antique shows won't negotiate lower. I collect this style of opener, and actually have several of this one.

What is this style of opener called? Of all my openers--the cool craft beer labeled keychains and ironic 'old man' beer swag--it is my completely generic opener like this that has become my favorite. Keeps the caps intact, too (which turned me into an obsessive cap collector for a while).

They are called bent wire openers. I've never heard anyting more specific than that.

I couldn't care less about the opener. In college I used a bic lighter, now days I use an opener that detaches from my electric can opener. Hell, last week I stayed in a hotel for a few nights and I was just using the hinge of the door and a strong fist slam to open my beers. Only shattered one beer neck that way!

I did actually buy the DFH stamped key chain opener. IIRC it was either $2 or $3. I bent the mouth open too wide though so now its just a cool key chain.

Within the Breweriana sub-set of opener collectors, they're also called "Wire Formed Openers" or just "E" types, with that particular design being an "E-14" (the most common). See the hobby's standard reference JUST FOR OPENERS HANDBOOK

I learned in college to open beer with just about anything. My favorite is using a CD.

If I ever lost this one I'd gladly shell out the 4 bucks or so to replace it:

Takes 'em off quickly and feels really great in the hand, can't ask for more than that.
