I just gave a quick look on bahn.de (they have English language available) and the train between Hannover and Berlin is about one hour forty minutes, without having to change trains. Düsseldorf is a bit farther at two hours forty-five minutes one way. However, if you like altbier, Düsseldorf may well be worth an overnight stay to do some bar hopping. Of course I don't know time and budgetary constraints so take this advice with a grain of salt. Likewise, Berlin is a tremendous city, worthy of well more than an overnight, although not so much for the beer as for the sights, museums, history, and general Berlin-iness.

Bahn has "tourists tix for 2." Last Set/Oct we had a "5day" pass that was good for 30 days for about $200. i.e. we could travel anywhere for the calendar day on system x5days. By example, we traveled from Hameln to Augsburg, by way of Hannover with a 9:25A departure to catch the 10:30 ICE in Hannover originating out of Hamburg heading to Munich with a stop in Augsburg arriving at 3PM.

On each ICE, we made a "family" reservation for a "kabine" compartment at 9EUR more. Single reservations are 5EUR, so save yourself the Euro & get the Family Res.

I think that Köln is under-rated for beer. TONS of History there & more going on than Kölsch. Just a lil pricey, but not nearly as bad as a München. While I've never been to Düsseldorf, it is on my list & practically next door to Köln.

Another thought too is consider flying in to Frankfurt (FRAPORT) & taking the ICE (which the platform is from the baggage terminal, up an elevator to cross over on an enclosed pedestrian way over a 3 lane access road & down another elevator to the platform for the Bahn...)

Thanks for the suggestions and tips on transport. I think using public transport may be a good way to go, especially when I am not so familiar with the driving laws in those countries.
