Commando on all. Although I've never hopped in the keg. Only FWH, Boil, FO/whirlpool and DH for me. There have been a few times when I add hops to a mesh bag, and tie it to my steel mash paddle laid across the top of the boil kettle, and that works well.

I wouldn't worry about adding your IC 15 minutes before the end of the boil. I always switch off the gas, take the kettle off the burner, then add my IC without any worries of infection. The wort is still plenty hot to kill whatever may be on it. A good rinse in star san solution before adding never hurt though.

Well, there you go...probably not brewing on a home system with pumps either...and it would be committing seppuku to keg hop and not use bags :grimacing:

Yea... that sounds like a dip tube clog waiting to happen!

Commando, except for fresh hop ales. Then I use a biab cloth and squeeze hops after it has cooled. Love seeing that yellow liquid and don't wanna leave all that beer in the cones.

    No kegs here.

In a few days I'll be adding a few ounces of "fermentation" hops to a PA I brewed the other day into my glass carboy. I'm thinking of going commando this time. For those of you who've done this, I'm assuming when I drop the pellets in, they will be caught by the krausen at first. Over a few days or whatever, will the moisture in the fermenter break up the pellets and allow them to mix freely into the beer? I just don't want the pellets to sit on the krausen the whole time and not do their job. I've used muslin bags and nylons in the past with marbles to weight them down but feel like commando would be easier and could work just as well (if not better).

I go commando all the time. The hops will breakup in pretty quick order. I sometimes give a gentle swirl to help that process along. I don't worry to much about the swirling given that I have a few gravity points to go that will chew up most if not all the O2 introduced. My last addition is day 5 then I transfer on day 8 usually with most yeast strains.

Hops straight into boil, no bag. I do a whirlpool and drain of the side of the hop cone. I pump hot wort through a counterflow to get to ~150 degrees for the hopstand, and I dry hop in the keg with both a dip tube screen and another carboy screen over it.
