Nah just means you've found some crappy imperial IPAs which often are overly sweet.

Hop burn out is an insidious disease, cures include cutting back on all beer and subbing out non hoppy brews. Try lite beers, Stouts etc. A martini or Bourbon doesn't hurt either. Time to cure depends, my 1st attack took about a month before I didn't gag on an ipa.

I keep seeing people mention RuinTen as a bitter hop bomb, but I drank a bottle and thought it had rather sweet and fruity hops with very little bitterness. But I'm still finding IPAs and IIPAs that are pretty bitter, so I don't believe I'm burned out on hops or something. Can a beer be that inconsistent or are people's palates just that different?

I agree. I've been mixing in lagers lately in order to keep things fresh.

Once hop burnout is full blown even lagers won't help. I usually dig myself out with Miller Lites that are ice freaking cold. Cold kills most taste, satisfies the need for a beer kinda thing.

There is a simple answer to this, but it won't be popular. Many people have not burned their tongue in yet. They equate hops to being bitter. Not true. There are many things that beer bitter. Including bitter malts. Once you burn your tongue in you are able to tell the difference.

What sort of DIPAs are you drinking? Many DIPAs edge toward the barley wine category with the amount of malt added. I find that many of the single IPAs, and even the hoppier APAs, often have a truer hop profile. Something like a Ballast Point Sculpin has a very light malt backbone and is very hop-forward. Maybe give your palate a little rest with some variety, then seek out some new IPAs to try!

I here ya OP, I'm allways buyin hops, then I after a bunch of hoppy Pales/IPA's I'll find myself craving a brown ale, porter or imperial stout. Crackin' a BORIS Oatmeal Imperial Stout later, that should do the trick.

Ahhh. I have fond memories of running wild in this hoppy field of IPA, and DIPA goodness. Then, to expand my horizons, there were stouts, weissbiers, barleywines and porters, etc!

Then one magical day, I discovered Belgium.

Today, it's ALL good, and 99% of the beers I drink provide a sublime experience...as far as havin' a beer goes. : )
So keep exploring Grasshopper, because the list is nearly endless.

Well, I starting drinking on porters and stouts on the west coast. I also just got back from belgium. I visited the most upscale alehouse I could find...guess what, they are all stumbling over themselves trying to get the beer I get in Ohio. They all want these hopped up midwest IPA's.

Now, don't get me wrong. I say...drink what you like. I have my go to's that arn't the most expensive highiest quality beers on the market, but they are what I can drink easily. They are what I like to drink...and guess what, they are hopped up IPAs. I can't even get close to a malty beer any more. I haven't had dark beer in more than 10 years! It will be a drain pour before it gets passed my nose...not even a ridiculous dark ipa. Because I don't like malt. Hops are what taste good.

Four C's is a dog shit beer. Maybe it ruined your palate by giving you the impression that it was a good beer before you ever actually had a good Pale Ale/IPA.

LTS. You undoubtedly have Lupulin Threshold Shift. This needs to be the focus of scientific research so that hops can be bred which do not cause this.

Until then it may be necessary to drink non hoppy beers for up to two weeks. I like sours for the "task" of resetting palate, you choose the one you like best.

^^^ I have access to that all day, it's at the store around the corner...I'll drink miller instead. Miller is how I reset my palate.

Go heavy on the malt-bombs for awhile ... drink lots of Belgians or find some good lagers that have sweet bready malt flavors and/or good pilseners with lots of spicy noble hops.

then go back to the IPA/DIPA hop-bombs

    then switch again

    REPEAT

For 904 consecutive nights without fail, (it was called: The Nights of Ale) I drank at least one different beer each night that I had never had. No repeats. It became a Zen-like experience. There was no targeted end date. It just marched on as long as life would allow...and I had the desire. It was never a chore. The event spanned four years (December 09 - May 2012) and was documented with four friends via emails each night containing bizarre images of the beer and "stories" each night. There were no references to currents events...just the great ale that night and a surreal accounting.

As a result, the education my taste buds received has payed off. And now I've never had more "respect" for great beer than ever. So many BA's have reviewed 1,000's of great beers. So impressive! I'm sure their palettes are honed to perfection where beer is concerned.

As always, drink what you like, but there is a level of beer happiness to be found through diversity and keeping an open mind to new styles.

    Just one BA's humble opinion. : )
