Lent is nearly over and my buddy and I are going to drink our first beer in nearly two months on Sunday. I am planning on doing a tasting of IIPAs/IPAs/APAs and need some suggestions on the order of consumption and just how many we should try before our pallets are too far gone to distinguish any more. Any suggestions on which of the following To try would be appreciated too.

IIPA - Hopslam, Ruination, Double Crooked Tree, 90 minute, Dreadnaught, Double Trouble, I Hardcore You, Lupulin Maximus

IPA - Two Hearted Ale, Surly Furious, 75 minute

    APA - Zombie Dust

Also have a ST Gemini tho not sure what category it fits.

I would start with the APAs and work your way through the IPAs up to the IIPAs. IMO Zombie Dust should always be consumed with an untainted palate, because the citrus flavor is amazing. I would finish with some of the beers with more prominent hop profiles, such as fresh Dreadnaught and Double Trouble. The DCT should certainly be included because it is unique and powerful, but I am not sure where exactly I would include it in a tasting.

Definitely the zombie dust first. Then the two hearted. Its pretty mild for an ipa. Never had Furious but I heard its pretty hoppy, so I would do the 75 minute first since DFH beers don't really tend to be too hop abrasive. The IIPAs are kinda difficult, so I'll only inform you about those I've had. 90 minute is very well balanced. Hoppy, but the carmel malt shines thru. Hopslam is hoppy and boozy. Dreadnaught is really fruity and hoppy. Ruination, while it leans more towards the abrasive side, is pretty well balanced. I would go for 90min, Ruination, Dreadnaught, Hopslam. The other dipas, fit them in as you choose.

How far can we reasonably plan to get before the tastes become muddled? Zombiedust will certainly be first as I've been seeking it out far too long. Got it in a trade for a Westy12 along with the Furious and some other goodies.

If they start getting muddled stop on new ones. Get a backup plan of stuff to drink in that case.

Good point. Not all of them are new to me but all will be for him. He's a recent good beer convert so I figured I could do a hop theme to stick with a style. So he can see what he thinks. We did the same with stouts and winter seasonals which he loved. Once I restock my Westy12 this month, and I know he can appreciate them, it will be time for a Trappist Quad run.

Be honest. This tasting was going to be strictly IPAs until you got hold of that Zombie Dust. In all seriousness I would alternate between lighter and heavier ones with palate cleansing in between. Reason being is that the flavors might get more muddled if you have ones with similar hop profiles back to back to back.

Open the 90 min first and pour it down the drain.

pour them all together and save yourself from the time it will take to ruin those beers by drinking them side by side.

what is a good way to clense the palate?

i can usually only drink 2-3 good beers before the tastes start being diminished/muddled

I would do it in this order: Zombie>75 minute->Two Hearted->Furious->90 minute->I Hardcore You->Hopslam-->Ruination and then leave the rest for another time, especially if it's only two people tasting.
