No, I'm not asking for a comparison of which is better, but just something weird I noticed. Even though Hop Wallop is only 70ibu (which I drink regularly) it tasted far more bitter than the Ruination I had. It had to be an old bottle is my reasoning (newbie here). Also, what are some good 2xipa's that I can try now that spring/summer is approaching? The more bitter, the better. Outside of Hop Wallop, Devil Dancer, Mean Manalishi and Port Mongo were some of my favorites from what i've tried.

Don't confuse IBUs with what bitterness is detected in your mouth, they don't necessarily correlate. Hop Wallop to me is a bit more creamy and sweet but still bitter but it doesn't come close to the bitterness in Ruination.

Other DIPAs to try that you can get in our area since you are from PA and ones you can get all year long or at least spring/summer:

    Southern Tier 2XIPA
    Smuttynose Big A
    Moylans Moylander
Moylans Hopsickle (will love this if you love Mean Manalishi)
Founders Double Trouble (should still be hanging around)
    Ballast Point Dorado
    Firestone Walker Double Jack
    DFH 90 Minute
    OB G'Knight
    Port Hop 15
    Coronado Idiot IPA
    Avery Majaraha
Stoudts Double IPA (more malty DIPA)

Just for a few and I know I missed a bunch.

If you loved Devil Dancer, try and get your hands on some DFH 120 Min, and you'd probably really dig Weyerbacher Double Simcoe as well.

EDIT: Also seek out Oskar Blues' Gubna

If ever in Michigan seek out some Shorts Liberator, so bitter it goes off the scale

I also found Hop Wallop to be more bitter and hoppier than Ruination, and all around more enjoyable.

Southern Tier 2XIPA is readily available in most places on the east side of the country, and I highly recommend checking it out if you're looking for bitter. One of my favorite stand-by DIPA's if I can't find something new to try, and it's dirt cheap ($9.50 for a six pack here)!

Since you're in PA, you should be able to snag some very fresh Weyerbacher Double Simcoe IPA. I highly recommend seeking this out.

Speaking of 2XIPAs, get 2XIPA by Southern Tier. It's great for the money. It's like $11 a sixer for me in PA, and it's worth every penny. It's so delicious for the price and the fact it's readily available. The first response has a lot of good ones to seek out. If you want to get into trading and you want big DIPAs, try and get Heady Topper if you want a hop bomb, or Dreadnaught if you like a sweeter DIPA that still has a bunch of hop presence.

<3 Hop Wallop. It beat some legendary beers in my blind tasting (Racer X, PtE, Hopslam) and was just as good the 2nd time around.

Hop Wallop no where near as bitter as Ruination. You must have had an old bottle of Ruination.

I love both of these beers. Hop Wallop has an interesting hop profile - American noble variety in the flavor aroma. Not sure which hops it is.

I have to agree, hands down Ruination takes the cake. I have had old bottles of Ruin though, and it can fade a lot..

Not technically a dipa, but Ithica Flower Power is as good as any beer mentioned thus far, and depending on where in PA you are, should be reasonably easy to find.

+1 for the Wallop. Very underrated brew.

When I had Hop Wallop, it was awful but it was from Total Wine so it was probably old so I'll have to revisit it.

Heretic Evil Cousin is INSANELY bitter. Overhopped, unbalanced, bitter as hell - I loved it. I don't understand it's 84 rating on this site. It is better than a lot of 95+ rated DIPA's here.

Ruination is a bit better in my opinion.

Not sure where in PA you are, but in my area it is really difficult to find fresh Stone beers, especially the expensive ones (like Ruination ~$16-18/six-pack here). It's possible the Ruination you had was outdated with enhanced malts and faded hops. When fresh, Ruination is pretty bitter. I also agree with the above poster that IBU does not necessarily measure the bitterness you perceive in the flavor. It measures the concentration of isomerized alpha acids (yay, wikipedia!) in a beer. The actual bitterness you taste is dependent on a lot of other factors, most notably the amount of malt a beer contains.

Yeah, makes sense. I mean I pick up almost no malt in hop wallop, which is probably why it's only 70ibu. I mean, founders RIS is 90ibu, and I can barely detect hops in that, it's probably just to balance the huge malt bill. I live in far east PA, and it must of been an old bottle of the stuff. Any way I can check how fresh a beer is (other than something obivous, like dust) without having to ask someone (it feels kinda dickish)? I've had 2xipa by southern tier, it's actually the mildest ipa to my palate that i've ever had, i've had it several times too... not really the biggest fan. Stouds 2xipa and Double simcoe are tasty beers i've had, though usually i'm in the mood for more of a hop bomb.

Hahaha seriously man, if you think those beers aren't hoppy enough, you either need a Pliny (never had it so I can only go on what other people have said), a Hoptimum, or a Heady Topper.

After having Heady Topper, nothing else really satisfies my hop craving anymore :slight_frown:
