Hoppy Stouts, Cascadian Black Ale, Black IPAs whatever you want to call them.

I love stouts and I love IPAs but it's a mutually exclusive love and haven't found many beers which combine combine both flavor profiles that have me reaching for more. I'm either in the mood for bright hops or a roasty stout and when combined neither itch gets scratched well enough.

Pipeworks Close Encounter was pleasantly dank but I was fine only drinking one, Wookie Jack is great but it's more rye the black, I liked Midnight Showers from Otherhalf but kind of biased because Hop Showers is one of my favorite beers, Epitome from Carton was also notable.

Anyone else in the same boat? Any one have any great black IPAs they'd recommend?

Enjoy By Black, MBC Weez and that Close Encounter would be my 3 suggestions.

Enjoy By Black IPA from Stone, I felt, was an awesome combination of these things. Hoppy and floral with some citrus in there. But you truly get some great roast and chocolate from the malt too. I really enjoyed it.

One of my favorite styles. Odell Mountain Standard Double Black IPA and Uinta Dubhe Imperial Black IPA are 2 that I've had recently that are very good in my opinion.

I enjoy Lagunitas NightTime as well as Dubhe. While I like most of Revolution's offerings, I don't find Jukebox Hero too appealing.

A hoppy Imperial Stout that I enjoy drinking and would recommend to others is Victory Storm King. I bought a case of this beer a few weeks ago and I am thoroughly enjoying these beers.

    Cheers!

Not one of my favorite styles but Hoof Hearted Cult Rider, Hill Farmstead S & S #2, Maine BC Beer 3 were all outstanding. I know they are not necessarily easy to find options.

Maybe that is part of my issue as well. Most of the shelf black IPAs aren't very good and I just have to wait for the special releases.

I love NightTime too, but that's because it doesn't taste like a black IPA. It just tastes like Lagunitas.

I have my expectations for this style set low enough that I'm constantly surprised.

I recently had a fantastic Black IPA called Blackwatch at Barreled Souls in Maine, though it doesn't get distributed.

Lagunitas Night Time and Firestone Wookey Jack are probably the best of the ones you're likely to find on the shelf. I think I remember Victory Storm King being rather hoppy as well, though that may be more of a stout.

RIP Stone Sublimely Self Righteous, my first ever favorite beer.

What does this mean? Are Rye and black mutually exclusive?
