Heyo, I was listening to a podcast the other day (dr homebrew), and they were talking about a hoppy braggot. It sounded interesting and I was curious if anyone knew of any that are commercially available? I've had hopslam before and could pick up a little bit of the honey, but would be interested to try some others. Cheers, Ben
Dogfish Head Brewpub, as of last week anyway, had a very hoppy braggot on tap. Not bottled in the store, but it WAS hoppy nonetheless. Delicious, too.
Braggots are a severely under-utilized style. I would love to see more, but they're so few and far in between that I would take any. Weyerbacher's 16 was a dark braggot and was delicious.
Yeah, braggots are becoming more elusive style for me to try. There were at least two local breweries that brew braggots, but they haven't produced them subsequently, I'm guessing due to poor sales.
Not necessarily hoppy, but I frequent Kuhnhenns in MI and they always have a couple braggots on the menu. Not that it helps your cause but it's interesting that they make quite a few when many places don't. They just expanded to distribute to most of MI. Perhaps they will grow to distribute outside of MI soon.
Going to Eastern Michigan soon nearish to Detroit. Heard a lot about Kuhnhenns... Will I be able to find it there.
I have tried 3 braggots so far: Cigar City Campfire Stories Strand 2nd Anniversary Widmer Prickly Pear Braggot They are definitely a pain in the ass to come by, let alone a distinctly hoppy example.
I haven't seen any hoppy braggots there in a while. Last time I was there they had "Braggot", "Pumpkin Braggot" and "Chocolate Pumpkin Braggot". If you're going there, make sure to get the DRIPA and Imperial Creme Brulee Java Stout
Bells calls it an ale with honey, the web page says a generous dollop of honey. There are other beers with honey added, Fuller's Honey Dew, and Wells Waggle Dance come to mind. Braggot is mead made with some malt base sugars added. It is usually around 2/3 mead based, 1/3 malt based.
Kuhnhenns has some limited distribution outside of MI including NYC (I generally find their stuff at Beer Authority, Rattle N Hum, and Tørst).
