I have a chance to get a free freezer for my hops but it’s from the late 70s early 80s and isn’t frost free. Does anyone else use a non frost free freezer for hops? I have no experience with these freezers and thought some of the science minded BAs could tell me if it would be detrimental to the hops. My thought was that there is little moisture in the hop pellets so it wouldn’t matter much.

yeah, i use one. dont know how old it is , but keeps hops fine. when needed, i thaw it out keeping hops in another freeze, then transfer back.

I would be more worried about your electric bill.

Frost free just means the freezer turns off occasionally and allows the frozen water to thaw, sometimes with the help of with electric coils, before the ice builds up. The liquid water drains through a small opening in the freezer and then the compressor turns on and keeps everything cold.

Keep in mind though that frost free or otherwise, it does not change the atmosphere in the freezer. The weather in your kitchen stays the same, and the water vapor in the freezer either builds up into a block of ice, or it drains out the vent hole. Frozen water is not water vapor, and has zero effect on your hops. The less often you open the freezer door the less often the moist outside air will enter and the less ice will develop.

    Cheers.
