I had a taste of my first Horus beer last night at Native Son Alehouse in Santa Ana. The bartender told me that they are the only bar to get their beer. Not just in OC, but in SoCal. He also told me that Horus doesn’t even have a tasting room, and that they just sell their beer through memberships. Anyway, Native Son had a “beer off” against local breweries and Horus won beating Chapman Crafted. This all just seems a bit enigmatic to me. Anyone else have anything to add about them?
Only bar to get Horus....nope. Consistently....maybe. No tasting room...correct. Kyle has a warehouse in OC where he sells the stouts and sours that individuals purchase either through the membership or for public to pickup after purchasing via eventbrite. He has small pickup windows for the public to collect their bottles. Uncertain if members get more time or multiple weekend options to pickup. Now, that being said, Horus/Kyle also contract brews IPAs out of a brewery in the midwest. The name escapes me at the moment, but those cans are found on shelves out there.
The Horus thread might help out with more info: https://www.beeradvocate.com/community/threads/horus-aged-ales-the-convocation-club.577233/. essentially, there is a membership and some public releases that get announced on Instagram. The warehouse for the releases are out in oceanside.
Just picked up 6 bottles today of the Modern Times/ Horus collab, Doom Hawk, really looking forward to checking one out early, from the taster I had I can say it's freekin unbelievable. Cheers,
I didn’t enjoy it at all on tap, but that’s what makes beer so fun. Different styles and different tastes can vary opinions. I’m hoping the bottles are a little tame, for my own preference.
They’re a glorified home brewer with no tasting room that only does small batch sugar liquid capitalizing on the same crowd that loves 3C, JWB, 3 Sons, etc. Not worth the price of admission unless looking cool to neck beards on social media is your thing.
Native Son is the only bar to get that specific Horus beer, Goshawk's Son. It was brewed for Native Son's anniversary. In my opinion it's too sweet and obviously overpriced.
If you like Pastry Stouts you'll like Horus. They use quality ingredients and know how to roast coffee or know someone who does it well. Unfortunately for many they don't have any local breweries who make pastry stouts and even if they do it's not great.
