For 2000 dollars, you could buy a ticket, fly to Europe, and enjoy most of the whales you'd trade for and have actual memories of an enjoyable trip.

Yeah, I see a lot of shittalking about this, but I actually like this system (although it should have been advertised in his tweet). It's like an extreme version of H&V charging $10 for Pliny, then donating it. If you don't charge that much, even with it being an unannounced release, it'll be a shitshow and most folks will get shut out. Raffles, ticketing systems, etc might mitigate that, but only so much. Yet if you charge excessively, you're profiteering. This way, the money goes to a good cause and there's no AftW fiasco x100000.

Sure there are other charities that might be a little more deserving, but that'll always be the case

Sure I'm going to skip out on this. I don't have that kinda cash to drop without planning ahead, and really, this would just be trade bait for me (20 year old beer in a clear bottle, I'm sure it's drinking nicely now). But some people seem stoked, so to each his own.

You can't please everybody, but this really does seem to me like the best option.

The best part about this release is seeing the whales come out of the water (albeit briefly) in the ISO:FT forum. 2005 Woodford Reserve Dark Lord in a swingtop growler? Wow.

A $2,000 beer is the dumbest thing I've ever heard of in my life.

Some folks have way too much money!

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to try the beer, but "The price is wrong, bitch."

The money goes to charity so it's a win win.

I would like to take the opportunity to say thank you for an awesome BA friend who let me taste this at the end of July along with 4 others for his birthday. We each received around 2.5 oz ($416.67 worth) for free ninety nine.

Secondly, as awesome and magical as it is, I'd rather have $2000 worth of Matt.

Thirdly, I will laugh if this is sold out today.

Bottles of Dave just siting here waiting to be bought and no one is buying. This is sort of turning into a shelf beer. Losing whale status by the second.

For any of you left wondering, here's the scoop I got from Wendy at the taproom at around 3pm today.
    • Yes, all the bottles of Dave sold (12 in all) and ALL went for the $2,000 "to go" price. She confirmed that multiple people were waiting for her before the doors opened this morning. All bottles available were sold before 3pm (i.e. I didn't get one! :grinning:)
    • Charitable proceeds are going to Guide Dogs for the Blind, a local charity that has already been gifted at least $20,000 by HotD this year alone! Ch-ching, add another $24k+/- to their coffers. Wow!
    • No, there will not be any Dave raffled at the Anniversary Sale as had been discussed previously. As kscaldef mentions above, the original plan was to raffle 6 bottles, selling 2,000 tickets at $10 each... but the government didn't approve of a beer raffle... and so they're left with a bunch of gorgeous printed raffle tickets (design & printing cost over $1k) they can't use.
    • Details re: the Anniversary Sale/Party and October 11th bottle releases are all pending... the Nov 9th party will definitely be 2 sessions with live music and street closure/tent out front, but will be limited to possibly as few as 300 people per session. Ticket info forthcoming... she's just a little stressed by all the planning for an event that's just 6 weeks away... but was friendly as always with me!
    Cheers,
    Brian

    Great thread...here's what I learned
    • This craft beer thing may have some lasting power
    • There are at least 12 citizens of Portland with at least $2,000 of discretionary income. I never would have guessed...
    • If there's a hell, I think 95% of the participants in the ISO/FT forum will be having one hell (no pun) of a bottle share down there
    • People are crazy. or stupid.

I'll just take comfort in the knowledge that all the idiots aren't concentrated in Oregon.
