I wasn't sure which forum to post this in, but what are some of the various yeast strains that commecial breweries use as their "house yeast"? I am mainly looking for strains that we as home brewers can buy (i.e. not Rogue Pacman Yeast or Alchemist Conan Yeast).

    Any info would be great.

    Thanks

Some have their proprietary yeast thatis not marketed. Bells is an example, and if they bottle condition, you can harvest the yeast.

I understand that and I have harvested Conan yeast before. I was mostly wondering about public strains that commercial breweries use.

Well.. 3 Floyds uses 1968, as does Sweetwater.. Use it for most all of their beers. I believe that Cigar City uses 1968 as well if I'm not mistaken.

As a heads up, both Pacman and Conan have been available to homebrewers.
    Pacman - Wyeast 1764
    Conan - ECY 29
Maybe not available all the time but if you are interested and keep an eye out, you can get your hands on them.

You got the list from Vikeman.

There are ones not on the list that can be explored, that are unique. Some breweries just use commercial sized pitches from Wyeast or White labs of Chico, 002/1968 Fuller's, or 007 Whitbread. Some use dry yeast.

Many of the Pugsley inspired breweries and brewpubs that started in New England carry on the English tradition with Ringwood yeast WY1187 / WLP005.

anyone know of any commercial breweries that actively use WY1450? (ie the old BrewTek CL-50 strain?)

If you are on AHA, post or message Denny, he's very active there and it is after all named...Denny's Favorite.

If you do some Internet searches, you will eventually find that some say it is from North Coast. It has probably changed from what North Coast has today.
