Hey all, a coworker of mine is driving from the East Coast to Houston then San Antonio for business. She is not a craft beer person but asked me if I wanted her to bring anything back. I am completely unfamiliar with the Texas beer market besides a couple Jester King's that I had. Any beers (fairly easy to get) you can recommend that would highlight the great state!? I know they are big cities, but any suggestions on big bottle shops that would cut down her search time in each city? In Houston she will be near the Galleria area / Montrose. In San Antonio, she will be near River Walk. Thanks for your time!

San Antonio: Closest beer store to downtown that would be worth her time is Central Market. Specific beers to look for:

    Freetail Local Coffee Stout
    Saint Arnold Divine Reserve 16
    Real Ale Commissar
    Real Ale Three Lions
    Prairie Funky Gold Simcoe
    Karbach Kentucky Habit

Lots of great things to hunt for in my home state of Texas (specifically Houston). But, if she is passing through Louisana, have her stop in Lafayette and try and snag Parish Brewing's Envie & Ghost in the Machine. Both are spectacular!

Most likely place to find Parish beers in Lafayette: Marcello's (@ the corner of Johnson St. and College Rd.) & Whole Foods. I would not want to miss an opportunity to try Ghost in the Machine.

For Houston: Karbach BBH Chocolate in floating around out there and is also definitely worth a try.

Specs midtown ( on smith street) and d&q are you best bottle shops in houston. Both are reasonable distance from the galleria.

I would throw the Cove in there for a great spot if the weather is good, was there a couple of years ago and they had a ton of taps (50 I think) in their beer garden, but can't seem to find an online list @pwsoldier do you know if they have one anywhere?

No online tap list that I know of, but definitely worth a visit if the weather is good.

GS1221 is another nice spot near downtown San Antonio. I prefer it over Filling Station and The Cove - both of which serve in plastic cups.

In Houston 8th Wonder is now canning their Rocket Fuel Vietnamese Coffee Porter... it is worth picking up to bring back.

Karbach Staycation just came out and its a GREAT summer beer...

In Houston or San Antonio she might be able to find Live Oak Hefeweizen in cans.... it stands up to the best hefe's you can find anywhere in my opinion. Its a highly respected beer.

LO Hefe cans just hit San Antonio. I got some at Big Hops Huebner, and all of the major retailers should have it as well.

For Houston stop by D&Q Mini Mart. Best bottle shop in Houston in my opinion.

Worthy TX exclusives worth getting would be Karbach BBH, SA Divine Reserve/Bishop Barrels, Yellow Rose, Live Oak Hefe, Karbach Weise Versa, Dankasauraus, Rocket Fuel, and hit up Brash if you got some time to grab some Cortado or Prestige Worldwide.

So even the barrel aged beers should still be on the shelves?

^ Bishop Barrels aren't on shelves, only bars/restaurants if you can find some to go. I still see multiples of BBH chocolate everywhere though

In Houston, what's the Galleria area (or a short-ish Uber ride) have to offer?
Will only be there one day/night and interested to see if I can locate anything interesting to bring back to SF.

Galleria area is a shitshow not known for beer, where are you staying?

    Hyatt Galleria.
I'll only be there less than 24 hours, so even if it's a place to eat with a non-MBC tap list I'd be happy. Will be coming from NO with a lay-over in San Diego, so hope that I can hit the Stone taproom there to get my fills.

Ok so if you are interested in an Uber ride your options are
Hay Merchant, down westheimer about 7 miles by freeway/4+ by staying on westheimer
Karbach Brewing (brewery and restaurant) about 8 miles because of construction
Whole Foods Post Oak: Walking Distance taps (Good bar food and pretty good bottle selection)
Richmond Arms: 1.6 miles taps (seems they have Yellow Rose on tap, and cask of St Arnolds DR16)
