So I'm heading to Houston in a couple weeks to go watch the Rangers beat up on the Astros. That Friday (5/19) I will be staying at the Inn at the Ballpark and Saturday we are going to head to the dog races and maybe run down to Galveston that evening. Figured I'd bring along some shekels to buy some Karbach and other things not distributed in Fort Worth. If anyone has suggestions of good bars and bottles shops in those areas (Ballpark, La Marque, Galveston). I'm really open to all suggestions but I'd prefer to support local business vs chain's.
DNQ and Spec's midtown are fairly close to one another. The Hay Merchant is around the corner, and the Flying Saucer is down the block from the Ballpark.
The Flying Saucer is downtown. I usually go there before a ball game. And usually walk to Minute Made. I have heard good things about Brew Brothers in Galveston. I don't think they have to many of their own brews right now, but plenty of other good options to chose. While not in Galveston, Boondoggles is in the area. Not something that is a must stop, but always a fun place. ~30 taps, good food, one of the first places in the area to carry a variety of taps. Though other places have passed them by a bit. If you can explore Houston a bit: D&Q and Specs Midtown are the best bottle shops Hay Merchant (same owners as Anvil, though just a beer bar and really good southern influenced food, 5 casks hell ya) Anvil (mixed drinks and an excellent selection of every kind of booze you can think of) All of these places are fairly easy to get to from downtown. My other favorites that are a bit more of a drive: Gingerman (the original, and still my favorite spot in town for a beer) Downhouse (excellent smaller selection, interesting food) Petrol Station (one of the best selections in town, good pub grub when the kitchen is not overworked) Queen Vic (one of my favorite restarunts in town, very good selection)
If you go to Galveston, check the big SPECS on 61st, you never know what you may find still sitting on their shelves. Galveston County and Harris County(HOUSTON) get different distribution so it is sometimes worth it to hit up a few bottle shops. Definitely check out Brews Brothers while on the island too. Good people.
If you go anywhere make sure to hit D&Q close to ballpark best bottle shop here, and Haymerchant is a big one since you can't drive out to Petrol Station
