I pass by this defunct building near UH-Downtown often. If you were on the METRO rail headed Northbound, it would be on the left side of the rail. There's a (yellow?) sign out front that says "Beer Cellar". I was wondering if anyone knew what that used to be, since it's closed now. I'll grab a picture today when I head down that way.

What Bruce said, I am pretty familiar with most the beer places in Houston. Never heard or seen this. I tried to search goggle, Yelp, Houston Eater, and Chronicle. Nothing hit expect that dive bar "The Cellar" on Richmond.

On a similar note, anybody been to the "Plate and Bottle" on Morningside Dr just north of Gingerman? The store front says craft beer, wine and small plate tastings. Though I have never actually seen the place open.

Can you find it on Google Street View? I'm not seeing it.

I set up the phone and internet before the grand opening. They are a wine bar with a craft beer sign and the owner knows nothing of craft. They have a good selection of wine however.

Shoot. Yeah I forgot to run by and snap a picture of the building. Guess it'll have to wait. I'll check Google street view out Rainer.

If you flip around to the other side of the sign, it says "Live Music Lounge" underneath the main sign. Still not able to find info on it on the web, which is weird.

It's a sign telling us that someone should open a beer bar there!

I know the Anvil and Hay Merchant guys are opening a new beer bar downtown on Main St. It is going to be next to Goro & Gun. I think it is going to be called Trigger Happy. Maybe that is where the bar is going to eventually go?

Goro and Gun is a little further down the street. And if you haven't gone, I'd give it a try. The shishito peppers appetizer was amazing.

That sign looks like it has been there since the 50's or 60's and has somehow survived the other signs that were hung onto it.

They just don't make things like they used to:wink:. Sorry, nothing else to add.

edit: upon further inspection there is a "for lease" sign on the building. Probably nothing in there right now.

   . I knew as much.

But I'm not sure that sign is from the 50's-60's. I'm thinking 80's or early 90's. This is gonna bug me. I want to know what was there once.

i was googling shit for an hour last night trying to figure it out. it's really close to where the houston ice and brewing company buildings were, but the time differences are too big to that to be relevant. not a clue.

The building is owned by Wiese Properties. The address is 110 Main Street. According to HoustonArchitecture.com the building is known as the "Raphael Building" and was constructed in 1876 although the Wiese Properties website says it was built in 1920.

I couldn't find much with Google about this property other than the above info and the most recent name of the club. Nothing about anything called "Beer Cellar" on Main Street. I called the number on the Wiese Properties website but all I got was a voicemail box. I emailed them asking about Beer Cellar and will report back if they respond.

I'm guessing the sign is at least thirty years old judging the typography and materials used. It could be older, but I'm certain it's not as old as the building itself.

I wonder if it still has beer in it.... I dont think there was much if anything available in TX 30 years ago that would be worth cellaring though.

That looks like circa late 70s/80s to me.

If you do find the answer, it's going to be a very dull answer. I don't think this is the ruins of Texas' beer shangrala.

I think so too, but it's kind of interesting that they never got rid of the sign. Makes me think it might have some kind of historical significance.
