I'm currently in Houston for a business conference. Staying at the Hilton North. Are there any local brands I should try or certain beer stores nearby that you guys recommend checking out? Any hidden gems or must trys?
Welllllll Greenspoint ain't the best spot for beer. Right now is a good time for local brews. Real Ale is really doing well. They just released White (cans) and their 18th Anniv Gose is on tap around town. Karbach's Hop Delusion (bombers) should still be around town and on tap too. Saint Arnold's berliner weisse, Boiler Room, should be on shelves at grocery stores...being that there are no grocery stores in that food desert of Greenspoint, you'd have to venture out. Your best choice outside of going in town is North on 45 to Woodlands or take the beltway feeder road to Spring's Vintage HEB and Champions Whole Foods off 249.
I know it is a pain to get downtown but a trip to the original Specs liquor is worth the trip, especially if you are into other liquor as well.
There is an Exclusive Food Mart off of Hollow Tree a few blocks west of 45. It's about 5 exits up I-45 from you. They have a good selection for the area. The only downside is they have a slight mark up on some of the limited releases that they carry. Wouldn't be a bad idea to check out the HEB that TX mentioned if it's possible. As far as local Houston breweries I would try Saint Arnold - Boiler Room and Endeavour. Their 20th Anniversary barleywine is still on shelves also. Southern Star - Buried Hatchet Stout Karbach - Hop Delusion and Rodeo Clown I'd definitely try to hit a bar and try some of Lone Pint's Yellow Rose. The closest craft bar to you would have to be Two Mules Tavern off of Cypresswood near 45. They only have 10 taps or so but they are constantly rotating what they have on tap. If you're heading towards the city then I would try to check out D&T, Petrol Station, or Cottonwood. Those would probably be the 3 closest to you if you decided to head towards the city.
Hop Scholar up in the Woodlands would be another north side option. Just a couple exits past Two Mules at Rayford / Sawdust Rd. Make a right at the light and go a couple of blocks. If you're making the trip downtown, there's always the Flying Saucer. They always have something good available, IMO.
If you like IPA's, go to a bar and try Lone Pint's Yellow Rose. It's a single malt, single hop IPA showcasing the Mosaic hop, and with a BeerAdvocate rating of 98, it is one of the best in the country.
Grabbed some at Specs Smith yesterday, saw a good amount on the shelf. Don't think it will be gone too soon.
I just went to Hop Scholar last night. Nice little place. I like that they offer beer flights. I purchased a Black Crack to go.
