Have the Houston beer detectives gotten more secretive about BCBS variants on here over the years, or does no one care anymore? One of my favorite hunts every year. Hope to see some of y’all out there. Sightings or details are welcome here.
Visiting Houston for the holiday! I have family set to watch the kids tomorrow, hoping to get out and hunt. Never done Black Friday in Houston so just looking for some guidance. If I don't hear of any smaller shops, I guess I'll try Specs. Is there one that generally caters to beer enthusiasts more than others? Looking for the best spot and willing to drive a bit.
Thanks for the info! Are there any smaller shops that get allocations or are doing Bourbon County promotions that you know of? In Dallas there are typically a few bottleshops that don't do big commercial advertisements, but still manage to attract some crowds. I know it's weird, but I haven't linesat in a long time and that camaraderie would be fun for a change.
Dude! Thanks a lot, I'll seek them out. My brother-in-law informed me that his house is about 5min from Brash, so I checked their FB page and see that they're opening early and releasing bottles tomorrow as well, not sure if that's your bag, but just passing the knowledge along. I think it said 7am.
Specs (I mean the main one downtown) and the nicer HEBs/Whole Foods are your best bet for Bourbon County and variants. In previous years Specs has held back a bunch of other releases and then released a ton of stuff on Black Friday. This year it is only BCBS variants. The lack of chatter in here has more to do with general apathy than anything else I believe. Seems like BCBS just isn't as big of a deal as it used to be. Especially with cases of regular sitting around grocery stores for a week or two after Black Friday, not to mention tons of other barrel aged stouts and the general resentment a large segment of the craft beer population has towards ABI/Goose.
The majority of limited releases have all lost their luster. I remember the days of every special had it’s own threads. The Barrel craze has calmed down and the quality of beers on the shelves her round has drastically improved over the past 5-7 yrs.
So I did hit Specs and got a bottle of Vanilla. They were doing unlimited 17, case per of 18 and a couple bottles of the variants everyone expected. I don't think there were many surprises. I grabbed some bottles from Brash (they seem to be your resident stout overlords) and might try to hit up Ingenious tomorrow before hitting the road on Sunday. I used to really love 12oz format BCBS and still do, but you are right, the barrel-craze is not what it was. I still enjoy them this time of year though.
Only found regular and Wheatwine but it’s cool. Had fun on the hunt and drinking an fresh BCBS now. Cheers folks!
