What's up Texans fans -- What the best brewery in Houston if I'm trying to catch a Texans game and enjoy Houston's best beers? Is there a brewery? Or am I better off grabbing a bunch of (insert beer here) and catching the game elsewhere? What's your local tailgating beer?

Working on a story for a publication. Don't want to rely on Google and ratings. I'd rather go to the people who actually know.

    Cheers!

Saint Arnold’s is probably your best bet.

Great Heights and Bailson's both have a nice bar, and several TV's along with food trucks. Platypus is almost a sports bar setting, and they have a full kitchen.

Saint Arnold's new restaurant and beer garden is amazing. While they don't have a ton of TV's, they pull out one huge big screen outside.

Spindletap and Ingenious both have plenty of TV's and food trucks.

As far as bars, Hay Merchant is always a good place. They often do food specials, and when any Houston team is winning they do $3 Houston beers.

As for my personal favorites to drink during a game, I always try to look for Holler ESB and Dollar Pils. I love Holler, but the brewery is not really set up for good sports watching. Saint Arnold Pub Crawl, 5 O'Clock Pils, and Amber are also among my favorites. There are a ton of breweries and bars, and everyone is going to have their favorites. This should be a pretty good discussion if more people get involved.

    Ditto Champ103

I say Great Heights is the top spot for a game and beer. Really enjoyed the FIFA games time to time there.

8th Wonder has a fantastic set up for watching games. Whole brewery is themed with Houston sports (more Astros/Rockets than Texans as I recall, though). You can walk to Astros, Rockets, Dynamo games from the brewery.
That said, I'm not a huge fan of most of their beers.
Would second Spindletap and Hay Merchant fora game watching spot. Hay Merchant can get PACKED though.
Saint Arnold and Holler are great, but again, not really set up for sports watching.

I was helping my sister in law move in the other day and escaped to Holler to try their new single hop lager (Nelson Sauvignon, damned good). They have only one large screen on the wall, but I sat there and caught the end of the Alabama/Georgia game. I am somewhat partial to Holler, so I would probably show up there early and grab a good seat. Also the thing that chaps me about Saint Arnold's is that almost everything they serve outside I can grab on a shelf, so I am not a big fan of that. And every time I have been there they are sold out of a couple of their beers. Seriously, you are a flipping large scale brewery, save off some kegs for your beer garden.

I wonder if this will get better as they start to get a better idea of the volume of product that moves through the beer garden. Same for specialty stuff.
That said, I don't recall Saint Arnold ever really having many experimental kegs on or R&D brews at the brewery. Granted I only got into craft 2010/11 so it may have just been before my time.

Last time I was at Saint Arnold, the Wed before Thanksgiving I think. They had cask Weizenbock, 5 different Bishop's Barrel on tap, vintage DR's and Pumpkinator in bottles, and some other things I can't remember. Not defending, or saying your experience isn't right, but that is plenty of unique things for me. I think they tap new beers every Wednesday, and am sure that sells out pretty quickly. Personally, I have never had an issue with the selection at Saint Arnold. Though I look forward to having uber fresh Pub Crawl, Amber, 5 O'clock and maybe Ellissa on cask more than anything else they might have. Thats just me

Edit: Oh and Holler vary rarely pulls down the screen. I'm actually surprised they did if for the Alabama game, as John is a huge Florida alum, I guess that is an SEC thing though.

Were all those beers available outside, or only inside? I have only been to the outside area where they seem to sell the core lineup + their citra pale and a couple of mashups.

You can order from the bar inside the restaurant, and take it outside if you start a tab. Also, if you get a waitress/waiter outside they should be able to give you a menu with a full list. It might have been that they get swamped and don't have table service at times outside, so that makes you have to order from the bar outside, and the normal stuff is all they have there. I would just walk up to the bar inside next time.

Elissa on cask, this should be a different beer from Regular Elissa.

+1 to this and Champ103's comprehensive post. And I would also add Eureka Heights - solid beers, good open space, and a very friendly vibe.
