This is not a knock on Houston Haze as I really, really like the beer. Yes, I understand economics and supply/demand theory before anyone asks. My question pertains to the pricing of Houston Haze. I bought a 4 pack a week or so ago and I was shocked when it rang up for $20. $5/beer is a little more than I like to spend on a pint from a grocery store. Yes, I can afford it, but it's the principle of the matter to me. Thoughts?
That price point is a little shocking for local/TX brews, especially from a grocery store, but that is basically the going rate for brewery release 4-packs of hazy IPA these days.
Good think I am not a big fan of them, I reserve that kind of cash for something I am going to cellar.
If you look at the nationwide trend, all heavily coveted NEIPA's are in that price range. Do I think Houston Haze can stand with the best of them? Hell no. They sell the 4-packs directly from the brewery for $18 so the $20 doesn't surprise me (once you include a distribution fee). I would highly recommend trying to get pre-sale on some of their limited releases, those are definitely worth the money.
I wrote something in my rating of this beer, along these lines a few months ago. It's good, but not worth anywhere near $20 per 4pk. Good luck to them trying to sell that for the long haul.
I don't love paying it, but it is in line with the rest of the country and even if it isn't on the Trillium, Tree House, Other Half level, the hazy beers they've been putting out are pretty damn good. If you are into NEIPA, there are only so many options within the Texas/Houston market and right now the few that sell cans are taking advantage of it (and rightfully so)
Weldwerks sells a lot of stuff for $16 at the brewery, but they have a ton of competition in Colorado and they're kind of out in BFE being out in Greeley. I was just in San Diego and the prices there for basically everything made Texas prices a little easier to bear. As long as NEIPAs are big, they'll sell those things like hotcakes. Houston is an enormous market too and Texas is very limited in quality NEIPAs. As ridiculous as that price point is, I don't see anything changing anytime remotely soon.
All Spindletap 4 packs are $16 a 4 pack purchased at the brewery. If you buy them through Eventbrite the price goes up to about $20 a 4 pack with convenience fees.
Im with ya - $20/4-pack has kept me away. Havent bought one in the grocery stores (and I refuse to at that price). That said, I think we can all agree that give this trend 6 to 12 months and suddenly we'll see four or five NEIPA options on store shelves. And that will definitely drive HH price down to a more reasonable $14.99 - $16.99.
I almost agree.... I had Houston Haze on tap and thought it was pretty good. Picked up a four at the store and put it back, when I realized it was $20. I picked up Hops Drop and Draped up fours at the brewery for $16. I enjoyed them too, but I wouldn't pay that for them again. It will be interesting to see if these prices are sustainable. I'll pay it the first time, but it better knock my socks off, if I'm going to buy it again.
