    Hi All,

I'm travelling to Houston next week and will be staying in the Westchase area for two nights. Are there any noteable bottle shops or beer bars in that vicinity that I should be sure to hit? Anything good on the shelves at the moment?

Sorry for the basic question, but I searched the forum and didn't really find anything!

    Thanks for the help!

    Kevin

You found nothing because there is not much to speak of. You can hit up Whole Foods at Westhiemer and Wilcrest, they have 4 or 5 rotating taps. There is Spec's Liquor at Westheimer and Kirkwood that will have a good warm selection and a decent cold. The HEB on Westheimer will also have a decent selection of 6-packs to choose from.

If you have transportation, you can roll up the beltway to City Centre and eat/drink at YardHouse or you can plan on heading in to Hay Merchant for a great dinner and one of the best tap selections in the country.

As mentioned, Specs @ Westheimer and Kirkwood has a good selection. That's about the best stop in that area.

Specs Westheimer/Kirkwood is nice, but I'd take the 15-25 minute trip to Specs Smith (downtown) instead

Also Vintropolis on Westheimer btw the beltway and Gessner has a few nice local and prairie selections from time to time. Don't go to the Sherlock's, that place sucks.

Vintropolis is great, avoid Sherlock's, and I am not a fan of Fox & Hound either. Heard good things about Ashford Pub, but have not been. The Bull & Bear is a pseudo Irish Pub in the same complex as the Kirkwood Specs. Kings Head Pub is a bit north on Eldridge Parkway, and is the same people as Stags Head and Richmond Arms. Worth a visit. That is about all I know. If you are going to go to that crappy City Center, might as well just go the opposite direction instead (towards town) and actually go to good beer bars.

Let me just be that guy to say you won't find good beer at Sherlocks, you will however find a decent amount of easily impressionable young ladies and shots. Proceed as you wish.

x3 for Specs on Kirkwood. The best selection in the area by far. But Specs downtown is just the Graceland of craft selection if you can get there. I do some trading with friends in Colorado and there is a lot of overlap in disto. They do request anything from Ballast Point, Southern Tier, or Harpoon since they can't find it there. You can also stock up on any Prairie you can find. Plus our Houston locals of Karbach, Saint Arnold, Southern Star, and a few others.

I'd be a bad person if I did not suggest to find you a pint of Yellow Rose by Lone Pint Brewing. It's only on tap at this point, but if you have anything while you are here, that would be just about everyone's first suggestion.

The only Bottle shop that would be close to a West Coast style bottle shop in the Houston area is D&Q The Beer Station at 806 Richmond Ave. https://twitter.com/TheBeerStation
Because of horrible TABC regulations and red tape, it is difficult to establish a true bottle shop with aging, trading, and cellars. The Texas Craft Beer market is still immature and needs to grow.

Ashford Pub on Westheimer and Eldridge has 32 taps.

Piggybacking this thread. Staying in the Woodlands for two nights next week on Thursday and Friday. Flying SW so if I can find a bottle shop in the area to bring any JK, Prairie or anything notable not in Chicago I'd love the advice. any must hit spots for dinner on the company card?? Thanks in advance!

When you get into Hobby Airport, you'll take 45 N up to the Woodlands. About 20-25 mins down you'll exit Exit 45 to Gray then Smith, take that up to Specs Downtown (on Smith St). Best selection in town on your way to Woodlands.
