    Hello Everyone,
I am new here but not new to homebrewing. I've been brewing all grain for about two years and have had some success. Anybody try to make a clone of Pliny the Elder? I am wondering if anyone would mind sharing a recipe?
    Thanks,
    Pat

If you Google 'Pliny the Elder recipe clone' you'll get choices for extract or all-grain, as well as links to the BA site with discussion. I've got an extract batch fermenting now, but I don't recall which website I found it. It should be an accurate recipe for a scaled-down batch as compared to a brewery-sized batch because the smaller recipe is said to have been created by the brewer.

Thanks guys! I ended up going with a recipe Northern Brewer had. They even call it the Plinian Legacy or something like that. 15.25 lbs of grain:grinning:

I just bottled northern brewers point clone I'll post how it is. Although I've never had the real deal so I won't be able to speak to its similarity. Also brewed extract not AG.

They sell a Pliny the Elder clone kit from morebeer.com. Check it out.

Did the grist from Vinny's recipe, but used different hops/hop schedule. Made my top six list. Fantabulous. Even if you don't have the specified hops, you can still make a great DIPA with the clone recipe.

I believe the kit from More Beer is from the actual brewer of Pliney the Elder.

I brewed it a year or so ago and it was absolutely wonderful. I have another batch going now and I put in the last dry hops on Sunday. I can't wait for it to be ready. It's one of my all-time favorites.

The recipe I have is exactly the same as the Zymurgy one, except that it calls for CTZ instead of Columbus.

CTZ = Columbus Tomahawk Zeus. You can use any of those hops, as they are trade names for the same cultivar. During a talk at the NHC a few years back, Ralph Olson of Hopunion confirmed that those were the same.

Ah, well, I knew it was Columbus Tomahawk Zeus, but I assumed that it was a blend of 3 different hops. I didn't know they were the same thing. Last time I brewed it, I got hops labeled, "CTZ" but they didn't have any this time, so with the batch I have going now I just used Zeus instead of CTZ. I noticed that it tastes the same though. I guess that explains it!

Yes, when you see CTZ listed, it means to select any one of those that you have or can find easily.

Thanks much! Going to secondary my beer this weekend and start dry hopping. I am probably going to do the marbles in a hop sack tied to sanitized fishing line method so I can fish them out. Anybody ever do that?

I just ordered this recipe from Northern Brewer, I also went with extract. I am very interested to hear how yours turned out. I will be brewing mine this weekend if it shows up in time.

It was pretty darn close. Within a few days. First test bottle was probably popped at around 30 days after the boil. Optimum was of course after about 2.5 weeks in the bottles.
