I've always been curious as to how breweries get their kegs across the country to areas they do not distribute to. For example there is a bar near me that always has great hard to find stuff on tap, like right now they have a beer from Grimm who does not distribute here or I see Funky Buddha kegs far away from here. Just wondering how they make the journey.
They probably make the journey by the owner of the bar driving to a state where it is distributed and buying a keg to bring back or buying it from someone else who has brought it into the state illegally. The reason I suggest this is that it is illegal for a brewery to ship their beer to a state where they do not have a distribution contract and/or have not paid a registration fee to the state. Breweries are allowed to self-distribute only within the state where the brewery is located, if their home state allows self-distribution.
Bootleg style. If there are no state registration of brands, I suppose it's all wide open. However, no state wants to relinquish revenue from non-registered.... if laws do require registration. D.C. is wide open like the wild west.
