Oddly enough, it was from taking a Wine Appreciation course. The last session was dedicated to beer, which (in the mid 80s) was kind of a unique opportunity. Prior to that class I was familiar with a number of different beers, but didn't really think beyond the label (Guinness Extra Stout has this flavor, Dinkel Acker has that flavor, Budweiser has its own flavor, and on and on)- but this class is where it all came into focus.

We learned about top fermenting and bottom fermenting yeasts, what each ingredient contributes, and how beers were classified. There was also a tasting of many classic beers. I can still remember many of them, because they were so well-chosen-
    Pilsner Urquell
    Bass Ale
    Anchor Steam
    Kindl Berliner Weiss
    Chimay Red
    Samuel Smith's Taddy Porter
    Paulaner Salvator
    Duvel
the hefeweizen was probably Franziskaner, but that one I don't recall- and maybe a fruited lambic too

    Michael Jackson would have approved.

From then on, I wasn't just drinking beer- I was thinking about it as well. I was even inspired to learn more about the world's great beers and why they were so revered. This was truly a transformative evening, and I had that sense as it was happening- but little did I know what lay in store for the next few decades. It's been a hell of a ride.

Cheesy or not, I think it's cool that my lady not only started my passion for craft beer but continues to support it.

    Cheers!

I ordered a Sprecher Root Beer while dining out with my folks when I was a freshman in college.

They came back with a Sprecher Amber and my pops let me keep it. The first beer I ever enjoyed drinking.

I'd always loved trying different beers, and it wasnt until sometime in my early 30's that i realized the predominant flavor i love was hops, and the ipa was what featured it most.

But what really got me into it was that stupid fucking "top 250" list, b/c it gave me a frame of reference. It made it exciting to find these beers and try them. Eventually I got tired of the whole 'hype/antihype' thing, but by that point I had a good idea of what I liked and what I didnt.

Had some craft beers when I was younger, but didn't know at the time that they were craft beers. Went through the cheap beer drinking stage then got sick of it and wanted to become more of a casual beer drinker. Enter into my life, the glorious nectar from God, craft beer!

Someone starting opening up breweries on every street corner in town, kept running into them.

Went through the phase of drinking whatever was cheapest and waking up feeling like death until someone introduced me to Magic Hat. #9 led me to start grabbing beers from Stone and whatever else I could find that was new. Now I've gone from someone who wouldn't think of grabbing a stout to getting excited when Founders Breakfast season comes around.

My first encounter with a 4pk of Founders Breakfast Stout is what got me hooked. That and visiting FFF's brewpub.

The article isn't about Scottish breweries, as in breweries in Scotland, it's about Scotch Ales, as in the style of beer… It's not a sweeping generalization of the beers that Scotland is producing.

I much prefer the craft, not the "scene."

For years I drank the likes of Hoegaarden, Spotted Cow, Blue Moon and Wittekerke but wouldn't really search for craft beers or try new things. Then I had a Central Waters Bourbon Barrel Stout and was amazed at all the flavor in it. That started a spiraling effect that has me here...

But Scotch Ale is a Scottish beer style . It has been brewed for centuries but not as the BA suggests.

Travelling to Europe sealed the deal, although my disinterest for macro did lead to some preliminary craft exploring prior to that.

As has often happened in the past I'm quickly beginning to think that I'm wrong. When I think Scotch Ales I think of the beer described in the article because that's all I've had. What are you referencing? What did the article get wrong?

Stone was basically in my backyard. My father used to go to their anniversary parties when they were still across the 78 at what is now Port and Lost Abbey. He being into craft and me being a broke high school kid was the perfect way my palate collided with craft.
