Really? They don't tell you how they set shipping rates?

Sure, they tell how to figure out how much it would cost to ship a given box. I was more interested in how they arrived at their numbers. Most of my questions were answered back upthread a bit.

Sorry, math major habits--I assume everyone can figure these things out, given enough data.

Ohh now that sounds like an idea, I could put together a google form and have people submit their shipping costs, package size, weight, carrier, ect, and we could come up with fomrulas for the carriers that give you average per ounce/per mile traveled cost!

I was told by a FedEx employee that it has more to do with how far the final destination is away from the major FedEx hub, than total mileage itself.

As an aside, anyone know the charge for Saturday delivery? Not sure if it's a fee or a percentage based on the regular charge.

saturday delievery is normal for home delivery, they don't do home delievery on Mondays (they will deliver to your house on Mondays for 2-day, express, etc)

Regular Fedex and Fedex Ground/Home Delivery are two different services. Sat. delivery for Fedex Home Delivery/Ground is standard with no extra charge. The Ground/Home Delivery service says that they don't deliver on Monday (regular Fedex does), however I've known both regular Fedex and Fedex Ground to ignore the rules and deliver whenever they can get the package to you just to get it out of the way.

It's been awhile since I shipped much stuff, but it used to be Fedex Ground was faster and cheaper than UPS Ground, so I used them for items that were too large for a USPS flat rate box.
