How do I add notes to a beer or place?

I searched the forums and looked through the FAQ and I don't think this has been addressed. If it has, then I apologize for wasting space.

Can you add the text that appears under the comments section for each beer either while adding a beer or to a beer already added by another user?

There are a lot of beers that I have added where I would have liked to put the description of the beer (at least the ones where the text is interesting or pertinent) and I have never found a way to do it. To further confuse me, some beers have text like this and some don't. Perhaps it is left over from a former incarnation of the site?
