What about Torpedo makes you say it's dank?
Not trying to put you on the spot, just trying to figure out what people think dank is.

With all the posts here re ganja, let us not forget New Belgium's Hemporer. Just a savagely dank beer, again with regard to dankness in the herbal sense. IMO it wasn't a good smell at all. The aroma had its own zip code and a freshly poured glass made a room smell like a 1/2 burned cartel weed doobie smuggled into the U.S. in a truck tire.

I do and it was a tasty brew. I'd buy another 4pk. Herbal for sure. Maybe they'll roll it out again :beers:

Again, dank for me has crossroads. For instance, Drastic Measures and Junkyard have dank IPAs that have food and or industrial aromas/flavors. Like aerosol cheese, a cold fast food cheeseburger, onion or garlic, tomato vine, over ripe fruits that are intense. And then industrial dank: dirty diesel, an old garage smell, latex, plastic, a heavy-as-shit OH DAMP factor that can only be described, hopefully, here by us at some point...

Dank in beer is like what the screen of a hash pipe smells like when it's time for cleaning.

Those days long over. Woodstock is dead.

Dankest beer I remember having was Avery Dugana, which is odd, because I remember reading somewhere that they brewed it to be less dank than Maharaja. The Oskar Blues/DC Brau collaboration to celebrate marijuana being legalized in DC, Smells Like Freedom, really didn't seem dank to me. Just goes to show that what's dank to one person is not to another.

I first thought of the first definition: more or less as in "dank basement". But I discovered the Gen Z slang definition high quality or excellent. So I guess you could apply "dank" to a beer that meets both definitions, if the style appeals to you.

Piney citrusy nose, sticky bitter mouthfeel. Everything about that beer to me embodies the word dank.

Not to put words in your mouth but…

Does the word “resiny” apply here?

    Cheers!

100% I'm looking for fresh weed flavors if I'm looking for something dank. I've found terpene beers to fall short as there's a good malt kick and hit of pine required to really make something feel properly "beer dank". Torpedo is a good example; I think any old-school dry IPA is a good starting point. Abomination Rotting Earth was a really good example of a new school dank IPA as it tasted like weed and rotting, gross fruit to an incredible extent. I think the combination of overripe, slightly earthy flavors alongside a healthy bitterness and the cannabis flavors are what makes something really dank.

Terpenes and more modern hop strains make too clean of a dankness, it's gotta be sticky and gross and REALLY aromatic, in my opinion.

For sure. I've had some delish WCIPAs that not only have a notable dry, sharp, resinous finish, they also swerve into the heavy pine resin/cat pee dankness in aroma/taste.

I would be interested in knowing what folks think of Firestone XPA in terms of “dank”. I have not had this beer, below is the two most recent reviews of this beer with some emphasis in bold by me:

“I had this the other day and was really impressed. XPA came and went, glad its back again (at least in this iteration). Firestone had been doing mostly questionable adjunct barrel age stuff it seems lately, so its nice to return to normalcy in some regard. Anyways, big brewery, small beer, run it through the usual grade deflation for such a thing here at this Next Glass database.

Pours light golden. Pretty good clarity. 1/2" white head. The aroma snaps the head back, smells heavy on the hops, something that usually takes a smaller brewery to go so heavy on something kind of financially burdensome. But no, just a big pop of Mosaic and Nelson here. Lots of weed, lime, diesel and blueberry cough strain stuff going on.

The taste is a nice light pale ale banger that is super easy to drink. The weed notion pushes just as hard taste wise. Throw a peach sensation in. Great levity, the body is just simple two row and maybe pilsner malt. Crisp and dry. Good lemon pop bitterness joining the lime note. Really delivers the fruity medley of hops in a minimal body. Big fan.”

    And:

“Crystal clear light gold with a modest but persistent head. Very resinous, piney hop scent. Flavor offers a lot of hops right off the bat, along with drying bitterness. Grassy, piney hops. Not much malt at all. Dry finish. Neutral, medium body, not too light, but not overly heavy. Nothing special, but enjoyable.”

    Cheers!

I reviewed it as a bit resinous but with no relationship with herbal dank. This beer is/was citrus dank. :beers:
