I vastly preferred the fish tacos at Burrito Union to Fitger's. Agree to disagree, I guess. I'll have to try Blackwoods next time I'm up that way.

Interesting take. Not sure about the significant gap though. Castle Danger is making top notch beer. Top Notch. Thirsty Pagan is legitimately good now, and Canal Park makes very acceptable stuff.

Fitgers & Bent Paddle knock it out of the park....everything I've had by Castle Danger is very solid, even styles I don't normally enjoy.

Everything else has been hit or MISS for me so I don't want to trash them.

Say it aint so! I seriously lover their wild rice burger and fries. I hope they fix this ASAP before I get back up there.

Sounds like I need to get back to canal park too. I had written them off after my visit there last year.

For what it's worth, I think the best fish tacos in town are at Canal Park Brewery, for sure. New chef in the last 5 months. Killer stuff.

Also, word on the street is that CPB has an Imperial Pilsner, a Session IPA with Green Bullet hops, and an American honey wheat ale with orange peel coming out in the next month or so.

    All new styles for them.

Hopefully they are finally letting Jeremy, the assistant brewer, loose!

Jeremy is actually brewing at Castle Danger now. CPB hired a new head brewer from Crescent City Brewhouse in New Orleans about 4 months ago.

Yeah, he's been there for awhile now lol. We stayed next to Crescent City when we were in NO a couple of years ago. The guy brewing when we there was rocking a Surly tee shirt. Bet that's the same dude.

More of a lurker here, but I'm going up to Duluth in September and am excited to try out some of the newer brewers (haven't been up for 2 years). Thanks for putting together these rankings. Also hope Fitgers is back on their food game, as it always has been a must stop.

I think Hoops leaving the Brewhouse is HUGE news. He is one of the top brewers in the state. I would be very surprised if we didn't see him in a new role soon, like opening his own production brewery or head brewer of a production brewery. I think he was one of those guys that was really frustrated by MN's laws prohibiting brewpubs from selling their beer anywhere other than tied houses...

Brings to mind the Barley John's situation.

He didn't have much to say about the whole thing. Not sure what to read into that. I'm really bummed he's leaving. Frank has been there a long time as well, so hopefully things will stay on track.

    From today's Duluth News Tribune:

Dave Hoops, the Brewhouse's master brewer, is leaving after 17 years. Head brewer Frank Kaszuba will take over as master brewer with Hoops staying on until the end of the month to ensure a smooth transition.

"I wish everybody at the Brewhouse the best," Hoops said, declining to say more.

Rod Raymond is somewhat of a controversial person in the Duluth area. He was fired from UMD as their wellness coordinator due to several sexual harassment complaints from female college students.

He then sued the UMD and compared his "plight" to the black victims of a 1920 lynching in Duluth.

Wonder if any of those recent events played a part in their departure?
